Marciaga between Trails, Rocks and Local History
Marciaga reveals its distinctive features above all where hiking trails, striking rocks and local history come together. The Natura 2000 area IT3210007 “Monte Baldo: Val dei Mulini, Senge di Marciaga, Rocca di Garda” includes the Senge di Marciaga and lies partly within the municipal area of Costermano sul Garda. On the route between Castion Veronese and Marciaga, the Santuario della Madonna del Soccorso stands on a green meadow framed by the rocks of the Sengie di Marciaga.
Hiking on Clearly Described Trails
The Sentiero Val longa is a 6-kilometre hiking trail. It begins in Marciaga at the car park of the Santuario della Madonna del Soccorso. Its route follows a marked trail through Zel and Val and along Monte Canforal.
Another perspective is offered by the Garda: Marciaga Sengie hiking trail. It leads through a well-preserved natural landscape with rich flora and fauna and offers views of Lake Garda. When exploring Marciaga, the focus is therefore not only on movement along the trail, but also on impressions of the landscape and observing nature. You can decide for yourself whether the route, the surroundings or the view of the lake is particularly important for your outing.
Church and Traces of Times Past
The local history includes the Church of Saints Filippo and Giacomo, the parish church of Marciaga. Its bell tower dates from 1686. The Sengie di Marciaga also contain rock carvings dating from the Iron Age. The church, bell tower and rock carvings provide different points of access to the history of the place: sacred architecture, a clearly dated architectural element and much older traces in the landscape.
Local Traditions and Established Connections
The local traditions also reveal a distinctive linguistic and culinary character. In Marciaga, 8 December is known as “Festa dei biscoti” and is associated with roasted chestnuts and Mandorlato. The traditional Festa dell’Ammalato e dell’Anziano in Marciaga di Costermano sul Garda was scheduled for Sunday, 1 September 2024.
Finding Your Way Around the District
The Parco dello Sport is considered an important point of reference for the Marciaga district. Together with the trails, the Santuario and the historic sites, it creates a local landscape in which nature, activity, architectural history and local connections are visible side by side.
What to Expect in Marciaga
For planning your trip, Marciaga offers several clearly distinct themes without reducing the place to a single activity. You can explore the landscape via hiking trails, examine traces of cultural history or put local names and traditions into context. Those wishing to combine nature and history will find specific points of interest in the surrounding area. The manageable thematic structure makes it easier to shape your stay according to your interests and preferred travel pace.
