Salionze on the Mincio: Cycling Route and Local History

Salionze combines a strong cycling culture with a locally rooted history. The district of Valeggio sul Mincio is the municipality’s most populous and lies north of the main town in the direction of Lake Garda. A local tradition connects Salionze with a meeting between Attila, King of the Huns, and Pope Leo the Great in 452. According to the tradition, Saints Peter and Paul are said to have appeared during this meeting, armed with swords, and persuaded Attila to retreat; as a result, he refrained from sacking Rome. The town twinning between Salionze and Bernalda, a municipality in the Metapontino area of the Province of Matera, is connected with this historical event. During the “Sagra di Salionze,” the tradition of the meeting is reenacted in mid-July with a costume performance.

Borghetto and the Mincio watercourse

In nearby Borghetto stands the fortified Ponte Visconteo weir, built in 1393. Those who follow the Parco del Mincio route reach a weir bridge after Salionze that controls the river’s outflow and the water level of Lake Garda. In addition to the cycling route, these two structures give the surroundings another historical and landscape dimension.
