Tregnago: Churches, Castello and Panoramic Hillsides

Tregnago combines sacred architectural history, preserved castle remains, historic washhouses and a landscape of scenic hillsides and lush forests. The themes range from churches and medieval architectural history to paths through hillsides and forests. Sacred architectural history in two churches

The Chiesa di San Martino o della Disciplina probably dates from the 7th or 8th century. It is a single-nave Romanesque church with an apse chapel built in the 15th century. The church preserves frescoes by Niccolò Golfino; there is also a 14th-century fresco in the lunette of the portico.

The present-day building of the Chiesa parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta was inaugurated in 1922. Its exterior façade displays Romanesque features, while the interior has three naves. The vaults are completely decorated with depictions of patriarchs, prophets, evangelists and Doctors of the Church. The two churches thus reveal distinct architectural and art-historical accents.

The Castello on the Limba

The Castello di Tregnago stands on the promontory east of the town, known as Limba, and dates from the 11th or 12th century. Sections of the surrounding walls, a now-ruined pentagonal tower and the clock tower have survived from the Castello. The castle remains add another historical focal point to the sacred architectural history, geographically located east of the town.

Washhouses and a historic baptismal font

The “della Pieve” washhouse is the oldest in Tregnago and is fed by the Bortola stream. The “Rì” washhouse is the largest in the town; its spring has been documented since 1506. An octagonal baptismal font made of red marble, commissioned by the archpriest Jacopo Rubeo in 1438, has also survived from the old parish church. Thus, in addition to churches and castle remains, the town’s history also encompasses structures connected with water and earlier community culture.

Hillsides, forests and paths

The loop trail “I colli panoramici di Tregnago e i ruderi dell’antico castello” leads over the scenic hillsides of Monte Precastiolo and through the lush forests towards Precastio. In addition, the planned Via dell'Iris is intended to run from Villanova Abbey in San Bonifacio to the parish church of Tregnago. The two trail themes therefore clearly differ in status: the loop trail is handed down as an existing trail name, whereas the Via dell'Iris is expressly planned.
