Valeggio sul Mincio: Bridge Fortress, Garden Park and Local Cuisine

Valeggio sul Mincio combines a landscape of morainic hills with striking buildings, regional cuisine, and opportunities for nature and wildlife observation in the surrounding area. The town lies between two regions. From the hill, Castello Scaligero dominates Valeggio sul Mincio and the entire Mincio Valley. Historical traces are spread across the preserved Torre Tonda, the Santa Maria monastery on the banks of the Mincio, and the Ponte Visconteo, built in 1393.

Bridge Fortress and Historical Traces

The Ponte Visconteo is a bridge fortress. It is approximately 650 metres long and 25 metres wide; its roadway is 9 metres above the water level. The bridge was connected to the castle above it and brought the total length of the Serraglio to approximately 17 kilometres.

The architectural diversity also includes the preserved Torre Tonda, a striking horseshoe-shaped structure from the 10th century. The Santa Maria monastery was built on the banks of the Mincio in the 12th century. The legend of the love knot tells of the nymph Silvia and the captain Malco, who left a knotted yellow silk cloth on the riverbank. Every year, on the third Tuesday in June, the Festa del Nodo d’Amore is celebrated on the Ponte Visconteo.

Garden, Animals and Morainic Landscape

The Parco Giardino Sigurtà, a park, is located in the vicinity of Valeggio sul Mincio. A herd of fallow deer lives there and can be observed in a large clearing. The park can be explored on foot, by panoramic train, on your own bicycle or a rented electric bicycle, in a rented golf cart, or by electric shuttle. This provides several means of transport for planning a visit; the options range from walking and cycling to the panoramic train, golf cart and electric shuttle. The mode of transport thus becomes a practical consideration in its own right during a day at the park.
