Cavaion Veronese: Olive Oil Culture, Archaeology and Historic Villas

Cavaion Veronese combines a predominantly hilly landscape with traces from several eras, regional specialties and paths on Monte San Michele. The mountain reaches 335 meters within the municipal area. Here, the morainic hills of the Garda amphitheater extend as far as the Adige River at Sega. The “introi” provide a distinctive way of navigating the town: narrow pedestrian passages that connect the streets across the slopes of Monte San Michele.

Hilly Landscapes, Olive Trees and Educational Trails

The Parco degli Olivi is home to 170 olive trees. An educational trail explains the cultivation area, history, production methods and characteristics of Garda DOP olive oil. The park also offers walks and relaxation while providing insights into Cavaion Veronese’s olive-growing culture.

The Sentiero del Monte San Michele was restored as an educational and experiential trail. Along the route, 12 stations provide in-depth information about the landscape, flora and archaeological aspects of the area. This gives you an opportunity to combine observing nature with learning about local history, without separating the individual topics from one another.

Churches, Towers and Villas

The Chiesa parrocchiale San Giovanni Battista has a monumental south façade in the Neoclassical style. Four half-columns resting on stone-based pillars, with Ionic capitals, shape its exterior. Inside, there is a single-nave space in the Neoclassical style with Palladian influences. Its furnishings include five altars as well as several altarpieces and paintings.

In the center of Cavaion Veronese stands the complex comprising Torre Civica and Villa Trabucchi. It combines a medieval crenellated tower with a 19th-century villa. Villa Trabucchi itself is a three-story building. Its architectural and decorative elements reflect the eclectic and Neo-Gothic taste of the late 19th century.

Other historic buildings add to this townscape. Villa Bonazzo was built in the early 18th century in a restrained Neoclassical style. The original core of Villa Ravignani-Ruggeri dates back to the 16th century. Corte Torcolo is considered a rural farmstead dating from the 16th century. Its name derives from the large wine press once installed there for pressing grapes.

Within Corte Torcolo lies the Arena Torcolo Theater, a large open-air amphitheater. Theater, music and dance performances take place there in summer. The town’s cultural profile thus extends from sacred architecture and historic villas to open-air events.

Archaeology on Monte San Michele

The Archeoparco della Bastia preserves evidence of prehistoric and later Roman settlement, as well as a Lombard fortification on Monte San Michele. Preserved there are part of the apse of the Church of San Michele della Bastia, remains of the monks’ cells and the ruins of a furnace used to cast a bell.

The Museo Archeologico is housed in the basement of the municipal building of Cavaion Veronese. It opened in 1990 following the discovery of a Bronze Age settlement near Laghetto di Ca’ Nova. On display are prehistoric finds from Cavaion Veronese, remains of a Roman necropolis and medieval materials from Monte San Michele. The Bronze Age settlement at Laghetto di Ca’ Nova yielded finds made of ceramics, terracotta, bronze, worked bone, amber and glass paste.

Fogassa and Locally Themed Festivals

Since 2015, Fogassa de Cavaion has carried the municipal DeCO designation, “Denominazione di Origine Comunale,” and is closely associated with Garda DOP olive oil. Its recipe was traditionally passed down from mother to daughter. Today, Fogassa is often prepared on a grill over glowing embers or on an electric stove.

Asparagus also has a permanent place in the town’s events calendar. The Festa degli Asparagi di Cavaion Veronese has reached more than 50 editions. Each year, this festival awards three “Asparago d’Oro” prizes: for white Cavaion asparagus, white Veronese asparagus and green Veronese asparagus.

The Festa della Madonna del Carmine, also known as “Tersa de Lujo,” is a traditional festival in Cavaion Veronese and reached its 294th edition in 2026. It includes artistic, food and wine, and musical events.
