Veronella: Castle, Churches and Themed Trails

Veronella combines a long-established local history with trails, churches, agricultural traditions and festivals.

From the Copper Age to the Castle Complex

The earliest traces in Veronella confirmed by archaeological finds date back to the prehistoric Copper Age. The village developed around a castle at a site later known as Cucchetta or Corte Grande.

A particularly striking testament to this development is the Villa Serego detta Corte Grande. Much of it consists of the remains of a medieval castle. An attached 18th-century building divides the agricultural complex into two courtyards.

The churches of Veronella and its districts also span several periods. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista had its first rector in 1388. The Chiesa di San Gregorio Magno was renovated between 1814 and 1818 based on a design by Francesco Fostini. In Miega, the Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate was redesigned several times from the 16th century to the present day.

A Proto-Venetian community founded an early settlement on the hills of Sabbionara; its necropolis was located near Lake Caneviera by Desmontà. The Roman Via Imperialis corresponded to today's Via Porcilana.

Trails between History and Agriculture

The Percorso del Colognese runs along side roads, is almost entirely paved and has only short unpaved sections. For personal route planning in Veronella, this means that the short unpaved sections of the Percorso del Colognese can be planned as separate segments within the otherwise paved side-road route during a bike tour. The cycle path leads to Corte Grande – Villa Serego alla Cucca. The complex includes barchesse attributed to Andrea Palladio.

The Percorso del Colognese also passes the Tezon, one of the last surviving 16th-century tezoni in Veneto. At Desmontà, the monumental hydraulic structure Botti della Zerpana can also be admired from the Percorso del Colognese.

The Via della Moreta di Veronella offers a different perspective. It is a themed trail that takes up local agricultural traditions and can also be explored on foot. The Verza Moretta is part of the Via della Moreta; this vegetable has an intensely violet outer colour and a white-yellow interior.

Festivals and Regional Traditions

The historic Sagra della Madonna del Carmine and the 3rd Festa Regionale delle Carni Rosse in Veronella 2026 offer food stalls and live music every evening from 9 July to 21 July 2026. The programme also includes a classic car and tuning meet, tractors and agricultural competitions, “Veronèla in Gradèla”, a funfair with a children's area, a charity tombola, as well as exhibitions, tradition and culture.
