Discover Borrello: Cascate del Verde and Local History

Borrello can be explored through three main themes: nature, views and local history. The Cascate del Verde are the main attraction, while the town itself preserves visible traces of different eras. Cascate del Verde Natural Monument

The Cascate del Verde are a natural monument with three cascades, each more than 200 metres high, between steep rock walls covered by habitats rich in vegetation. A second, higher and more easily accessible viewpoint also offers a view of the Cascate del Verde. The different elevations of the two viewpoints help you consciously choose your perspective on the natural monument. In this way, the impression of the cascades and the view from above stand side by side as two clearly distinct ways of experiencing it. If you place particular importance on views when choosing your stops, this distinction provides helpful guidance.

The natural area includes the Cascate del Verde Regional Nature Reserve. More than 30 wild orchid species have been recorded in its garrigue and pastures. The vegetation is also a focus in its own right: orchids, garrigue, pastures and the two tree species represent different components of the protected area. The area is designated in the Natura 2000 network as a Special Area of Conservation named “Abetina di Rosello e cascate del Rio Verde”. The reserve is also home to silver fir (Abies Alba) and holm oak (Quercus Ilex), which occur together. The different habitats therefore range from garrigue and pastures to areas where both tree species grow together.

Local History in the Historic Centre

On the edge of Borrello’s historic centre, above the cliffs of Ripi and overlooking the Sangro Valley, stands the old Chiesa di Sant’Egidio. Over the centuries, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times. Its late Baroque limestone portal is decorated with an image of the Madonna.

Historical traces have also been preserved elsewhere: a small part of the ancient Portasaracina is still visible in Borrello, as are some remains of Borrello’s medieval castle. Another cultural reference point is the Museo della civiltà contadina. It is located on the ground floor of Borrello Town Hall. The historical evidence is thus spread across religious architecture, fortification remains and rural everyday culture. Anyone who does not want to explore local history through just one building can view these different traces as several ways of engaging with the town.

Between Forest and Town

Another option is to take walks through the forest and the town accompanied by a donkey cared for by a local association. The routes pass through two different environments and offer a different focus from viewing a single building or viewpoint. This makes it possible to experience Borrello as a connection between the surrounding landscape and the settled area.
