Assergi lies at an elevation of about 900 metres, directly below the western slope of Gran Sasso. From here, Campo Imperatore can be reached via the Fossa di Paganica Pass. Fonte Cerreto is located in the vicinity of Assergi; the lower cable-car station to Campo Imperatore is situated there. The Fossa di Paganica Pass and the lower station at Fonte Cerreto provide two connections to Campo Imperatore.
Medieval Centre and Monastic History
The historic centre of Assergi is medieval, and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Assergi dates from the 12th century. In the cloister of the former Franciscan monastery, frescoes depict the life and work of Saint Bernardino of Siena. The institutional headquarters of the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park is located in Assergi on the grounds of a former Franciscan monastery. The Assergi Antiquarium is located in the underground rooms of the old monastery, which now houses the park administration. It contains objects from the Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age. A reconstruction of a tomb from the 3rd century BC can also be seen.

I Riposi e l'Acqua is a three-day route through Assergi, San Pietro della Jenca and Valle del Vasto.
