Villalago: Lakes, Borgo and Tradition

Villalago combines waterscapes, an old fortified borgo and religious heritage. The town therefore offers different perspectives on nature, culture and outdoor activity: from the lakes and their shores to historic buildings and hiking trails with clear route details. Lakes, protected area and lakeside paths

Lago di San Domenico is an artificial reservoir built by Enel in the post-war period to generate electricity. An approximately 53-hectare zone of the Lago di San Domenico and Lago Pio Regional Nature Reserve includes the artificial basin and parts of the surrounding area. A second zone, covering 7 hectares, encompasses Lago Pio in the old fortified borgo of Villalago. Lago di San Domenico lies in the Prato Cardoso area and has intensely emerald-green water. At Lago Pio, a concrete path and a narrow strip of shore lined with willows form part of the lakeside landscape.

Historic buildings and local culture

The Museo delle Acque is housed in Villalago’s former town hall. The Casa Rurale presents an old 19th-century house with a kitchen, oven and bedroom, as well as objects from Villalago’s traditions. The Museo del Lavoro e della Religiosità popolare is located in the medieval tower; it overlooks the Valle del Sagittario and offers panoramic views of Lago di San Domenico. The historic borgo preserves old houses and visible traces of its past. Il Mulino lies above Lago di San Domenico. An old millstone and a wooden fulling mill made of oak, operated by water power, have been preserved there. Il Mulino is fed by the springs of the Sagittario River, dates back to around the year 1000 and is fully operational.

Religious heritage and Fanoglie

The parish church of Madonna di Loreto in Villalago dates back to the 14th century and preserves important relics of Saint Domenico Abate. From the chapel of San Domenico, a steep, narrow stone staircase leads to the cave. A special local tradition is the Fanoglie: on the anniversary of the death of San Domenico Abate, residents light fires in every neighborhood in honor of the patron saint. The evening includes sausages, potatoes, grilled dishes and fish.

Hiking trails of varying lengths

The classic hiking trail from Villalago to Monte Argatone leads to a summit at an elevation of 2,419 m and takes approximately 4 hours from the town. The Cammino di San Domenico Abate passes through Villalago at an elevation of 920 m. The “Orsa Amarena” hiking trail connects Lago Pio with Lago di San Domenico. It is 7.6 km long, has an elevation gain of 300 m and takes 3 hours to walk. Fishing for brown trout is also possible at Lago di San Domenico; the basin is rich in brown trout.

Practical orientation on site

At Lago di San Domenico, you can park in the parking areas along the lakeside road and continue on foot to the bridge. From there, the path leads to the Eremo di San Domenico or to the picnic area. At Lago Pio, an educational trail designed with QR codes allows you to discover the borgo of Villalago, the Lago di San Domenico and Lago Pio Regional Nature Reserve, and the local wildlife. In this way, nature, local history and the special features of the lakes can be combined along different routes.
