Pietransieri: Rock, Forest and Memory

Pietransieri combines a distinctive mountain landscape with local history and regional everyday culture. The place name has Lombard origins and is connected with „Petra Anseri“. The earliest mention of „Petra Anseri“, today’s Pietransieri, dates from 1150. For a trip that combines nature, remembrance and local customs, the village offers several different points of connection.

The N1 Hiking Trail to Pietransieri

The N1 hiking trail begins in Quarto del Barone and ends in Pietransieri. There is a water point along the trail at Fonte Santamico. The N1 passes through the wooded area on Monte Tocco, descends along the rocky slope of Serra Castellana, crosses a pine forest and emerges above Pietransieri. When planning a specific hike, the transition between wooded and rocky sections is just as relevant as emerging above Pietransieri.

Falesia and Piana del Rè

Immediately above the settlement lies the Falesia di Pietransieri, in a peaceful and impressive setting in Parco Nazionale della Majella. There are 24 well-secured climbing routes of intermediate difficulty. Bouldering is possible at the entrance to the cave at the foot of the Falesia di Pietransieri. The 24 routes and the bouldering at the cave entrance represent two different forms of climbing on the same rock formation. The area’s landscape also includes the Piana del Rè: The plateau lies at an altitude of 1,626 metres and is characterised by its nature, flora and fauna. It is located at the foot of Monte Tocco.

Remembrance in Pietransieri

The Sacrario dei Caduti del Limmari commemorates the massacre that took place in Pietransieri on 21 November 1943, in which 128 people, including 60 women, were killed in the Bosco di Limmari.

Local Culture and Church

Every year, the „pittera“ is part of the Sagra della Pasta Fresca. Young people and women knead fresh pasta together, with the focus on community spirit. Masses are celebrated at the Chiesa San Bartolomeo Apostolo in Pietransieri on Wednesdays and Fridays at 4:00 p.m., and at 11:00 a.m. on public holidays. For a church visit, you can consciously choose between a weekday appointment in the afternoon and a public-holiday service in the late morning.
