Hermitages between rock face and beech forest

The Eremo-Abbazia di Santo Spirito a Maiella is located in the Roccamorice area within the Parco Nazionale della Majella. The Chiesa di Santo Spirito a Maiella has a particularly striking natural setting: it lies at 1,132 metres above sea level on a limestone rock face surrounded by an extensive beech forest. The building is also located in the Roccamorice area and in the heart of the Parco Nazionale della Majella.

Another combination of architecture and nature is shown by the Eremo di San Bartolomeo in Legio. It was built beneath a 50-metre-long rock overhang at an altitude of around 600 metres. The differing elevations and geological settings in particular make the two sites distinct stops within the Roccamorice landscape, without them being combined into a single excursion destination.

Hiking trails and climbing opportunities

Sport climbing is possible at the Parete dell’Orso in the Valle di Santo Spirito. The rock face offers several climbing routes with different levels of difficulty. The C7 hiking trail leads on foot from Roccamorice to the Sentiero Spirito near the Località Macchia Metola or to the C1 at the Località Pagliari. It is 5.9 kilometres long, takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes, and has difficulty level E – Escursionistico. A considerably longer option is the hiking route between Sant'Eufemia a Maiella and Roccamorice. It is completed on foot, is 22 kilometres long, takes 7 hours and has difficulty level EE for experienced hikers. Orientation and guided experiences

The information centre of the Parco Nazionale della Majella in Roccamorice is open daily from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00 from 15 June to 31 August. The centre also offers bookings for guided excursions with AIGAE guides from the Valle di Santo Spirito to the Block Haus.

Mining history and rural cultural heritage

Roccamorice preserves more than just religious and landscape landmarks. In the Località Acquafredda, industrial archaeology and the remaining mining landscape overlap with the natural surroundings and traces of the former agro-pastoral culture. The area includes some of the most important mines of the Bacino di estrazione di asfalto e bitume della Maiella, including San Giorgio, Torretta, Acquafredda and Santo Spirito. The history of this industrial complex and the associated working culture extends approximately from 1850 to 1950.

Another characteristic element is the Capanne in Pietra a Secco of Roccamorice. Farmers and shepherds built them from the early years of the 19th century onwards. They served mainly as temporary accommodation and storage areas for agricultural equipment. The cultural heritage of the Capanne in Pietra a Secco comprises more than 250 dry-stone huts.
