Colledara Among Churches, Nature and Local History

Colledara combines sacred architecture, small historic town centers and a protected natural area. This makes the town suitable for travelers who want to discover Italian history not only through major attractions, but also through churches, squares and visible traces of former fortifications. Churches and Historic Townscapes

In the district of Castiglione della Valle, the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo stands on the medieval square at the center. The church dates from the 12th century. San Paolo is also worth seeing: the church has a single nave, a Baroque wooden altar and a high altar made partly of wood and partly of plaster. Remains of the old bastion and the surrounding walls of Castiglione della Valle are still visible. Colledara is also the hometown of the writer Fedele Romani.

Villa Petto lies on two levels, separated by the main square. Santa Lucia is located among the old houses of the historic town center; visible traces of the castle fortifications on which it was built have been preserved at the church. Inside, Santa Lucia houses two Renaissance altars and a valuable holy-water font from 1568. The Chiesa di San Salvatore in Villa Petto is now a ruin.

The Chiesa di San Nicola in Vico was rebuilt in 1811 and has a stone portal with a flat architrave, two square side windows and a round window above them. It is located on the road connecting Vico, Ornano Grande and Forca di Valle. In Collecastino, the Chiesa di San Rocco probably dates from 1755; it was extensively restored in 1881. Its portal, made entirely of brick, features small columns and consoles on the sides, as well as a curved architrave. The Chiesa di San Pietro in Bascianella was completed in 1591.

Fiumetto Nature Reserve and Trails in the Countryside

The Fiumetto Nature Reserve in Colledara was established in 1990 and covers just over 74 hectares along the Fiumetto stream near Castiglione della Valle. Numerous trails cross the area, including a Botanical Trail used for guided educational visits. The visitor center focuses on natural history and features a herbarium, a xylotheque, an insectarium, an educational pond and a thematic panel on the fauna of the Fiumetto River.

August Festivals with Historical and Culinary Connections

In August, Colledara hosts the Sagra della porchetta. Also in August, there is a historical reenactment of the presumed stay of Lucrezia Borgia and Alfonso d'Aragona in Castiglione della Valle. Both events complement the churches and nature trails with cultural occasions tied to a specific time of year. When planning your stay, you can therefore distinguish between permanently visible local history, experiences in nature and a visit in August.
