Basciano: Mountain Spur, Churches and Regional Culture

The medieval past is evident in the remains of the walls and castle. They show that Basciano was a fortified village in the Middle Ages. In the town center, the Church of San Flaviano stands next to Porta Penta, with the Torre di San Giorgio rising above it. San Flaviano is documented as early as 1073 and was remodeled in the 16th century. The church has a bronze portal with relief depictions of Saint Flavian and evangelical scenes, a 16th-century baptismal font, and two paintings of Saint Flavian and Saint Roch. The case of an organ built by Adriano Federi in 1760 has also been preserved; the organ pipes were apparently sold in the 1970s.

Churches with Distinctive Details

The Church of Santa Maria a Porto Lungo has a 17th-century wooden Baroque altar with gilded decorations. Its ceiling is completely covered with majolica tiles featuring geometric patterns and stylized animal depictions; the wooden portal is divided into 48 panels. The Romanesque Church of Santa Maria ad Portum Longum probably dates from the 14th century. The Church of Sant'Agostino houses statues of Saint Augustine, Saint Peter Martyr, Saint Anne and Saint Anthony of Padua.

Archaeology and Painted House Walls

The San Rustico archaeological site lies near the confluence of the Mavone and Vomano rivers, in an open area covered with lush vegetation. The vicus of San Rustico was an ancient settlement with numerous houses built along the Via Cecilia. In the hamlet of Azzinano, artists from all over Italy have been painting house walls with scenes depicting children's games since 2001.

Trails, Festivals and Flavors

Variant B of the Cammino Teramano runs from Basciano to Bisenti through the Castel Cerreto Regional Nature Reserve. It is 15 kilometers long and takes 3 hours and 15 minutes. As part of the Basciano–Bisenti stage, a wine tasting featuring local wines is scheduled: in even-numbered years on the last Sunday in August and in odd-numbered years on the first Sunday in September. Prosciutto di Basciano is made from the haunch of mature pigs, carefully aged and dried by air coming from Gran Sasso. The Sagra del Prosciutto di Basciano began in 1968 and reached its 57th edition in 2026. During a local ceremony, girls carry traditional Canestrelle on their heads, enter a church and present harvested grain to the Madonna di Porto Lungo. The Festival Abruzzese dell’Organetto Ddu’ Botte includes the historic “Ddu’ Botte” competition for the Abruzzese organetto.
