Corropoli can be explored through the Neolithic settlement of Ripoli, the sacred architectural history of Sant'Agnese, the Torre Campanaria, trails through the countryside, and the Palio delle Botti.

Neolithic History in Ripoli

The Villaggio Neolitico di Ripoli is located on a broad river terrace on the left bank of the Vibrata stream in the municipality of Corropoli. The settlement dates approximately from 5200 to 4000 BC and bears witness to the emergence of agriculture and livestock farming in central Italy. The history of this site therefore reaches far back into the early period of farming cultures. Its location on the broad river terrace on the left bank of the Vibrata gives the archaeological site a clear geographical setting.

Painted, three-coloured pottery was produced at Ripoli and is among the oldest pottery in Italy. Agriculture, livestock farming and pottery represent different aspects of early settled life at Ripoli. The pottery connects the chronological setting with tangible evidence of craftsmanship.

Church and Tower in Architectural History

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Sant'Agnese is a Marian shrine and the main church of Corropoli. It was built on Roman remains; its first expansion took place in the 14th century. This building thus brings together the religious significance of the Marian shrine, its function as the main church, and an architectural development whose origins date back to Roman times. The first expansion in the 14th century marks a medieval point in this architectural history.

The Torre Campanaria is also part of the area's architectural history. It is one of the four “brother bell towers” in the province of Teramo. The others are located in Atri, Teramo and Campli. The four towers therefore form a regional group within the province of Teramo.

Walking and Cycling Trails through the Countryside

The Sentiero Pedonale Badia connects the Badia di Mejulano with the Pista Ciclabile. The path has existed for a long time and was only recently renovated with handrails on both sides. The Pista Ciclabile runs along the bed of the Fosso Gallerici and offers impressive views as well as sections of particular ecological and naturalistic interest. The handrails are a visible feature of the recent renovation.

The Sentiero Pedonale Badia and the Pista Ciclabile therefore already differ in their names and means of travel: one is a walking path, while the other is a cycling route.

Palio delle Botti with Teams and Barrel Rolling

In the Palio delle Botti, teams representing the Contrade compete against one another. Two pairs of “Spingitori” each roll a 70 kg barrel up an uphill course. The weight of the barrel and the uphill course define the physical aspect of the competition.
