Guardia Vomano between churches, art and landscapes
Guardia Vomano is situated on a hill overlooking the left bank of the Vomano River. Its religious sites include San Clemente al Vomano and the parish church of San Rocco in Guardia Vomano. The surrounding area is also home to two palaces and two museums.
San Clemente al Vomano: portal, ciborium and fresco
The stone portal of San Clemente al Vomano is dated to 1108. The central ciborium of San Clemente al Vomano dates from the middle of the 12th century and may be the oldest in Abruzzo.
The fresco of the Madonna Regina in San Clemente al Vomano dates from the second half of the 13th century and is attributed to the workshop of Gentile da Rocca.
San Rocco and its reopening
San Rocco in Guardia Vomano is a parish church. Due to earthquake damage, the church remained closed for six years. On 14 August, it was reopened for worship. The reopening on 14 August therefore marks a separate date in the history of San Rocco.
Palaces and museums in the surrounding area
The surrounding area of Guardia Vomano is home to Palazzo De Sterlich and the Museo Civico della Cultura Materiale. Also located nearby are Palazzo dei Duchi d'Acquaviva and the Museo Civico Etnografico di Atri.
The two palaces and the two museums therefore stand as independent cultural destinations alongside San Clemente al Vomano and San Rocco.
The seventh stage of the Cammino Teramano
The seventh stage of the Cammino Teramano leads from Atri to Notaresco. One variant passes via the Abbazia di San Clemente al Vomano. It covers 19 km and takes 3 hours and 50 minutes. Both figures can be used directly when planning this section of the route individually. The number of kilometres indicates the length of the route, while the stated duration indicates the time required. Anyone planning this variant as a full day section can treat 19 km and 3 hours and 50 minutes as corresponding figures. The stage can thus be planned as a clearly defined section of the Cammino Teramano. In this variant, San Clemente al Vomano connects the church with the hiking section. For individual planning, a religious site and a stage route come together there.
Feast day of Saint Roch in August
Every year on 16 August, celebrations are held in Guardia Vomano in honour of Saint Roch. The feast day falls two days after the reopening of San Rocco on 14 August. Those planning their stay around these dates can take the feast day and the reopening into account separately in their individual August itinerary.
