Isola del Gran Sasso D'Italia combines religious buildings, medieval traces, and paths through the mountainous landscape of Abruzzo.

The Hermitage of San Nicola was founded between the 10th and 11th centuries by Camaldolese monks. In the center of Isola del Gran Sasso, the Cona di San Sebastiano Chapel houses a significant fresco cycle by the painter Andrea De Litio. The Santuario di San Gabriele was founded in 1908.

Several churches take you through very different eras. The Church of San Valentino is a Romanesque building dating from 1324. The Church of San Salvatore in Fano di Corno dates from the 7th century. Castello di Pagliara was first mentioned in the Catalogus Baronum from 1150–1168.

Hiking Along Historic Routes

The circular hike “Isola del Gran Sasso – San Valentino – Cerchiara” follows the traces of the ancient Romans along the Via Ceciliana. It also leads to the ruins of the Church of San Cassiano near Cesa di Francia, a district of Isola del Gran Sasso. The Church of San Cassiano dates from the 13th century.

Another hike from Isola del Gran Sasso to the ruins of Castello di Pagliara begins in Isola and leads to the castle ruins. The two routes make it easier to choose between a circular hike with several stops and a hike whose destination is the ruins. This allows you to focus your planning more on cultural history, the route itself, or the landscape.

Forests, Springs, and Waterways

In Isola del Gran Sasso d’Italia, hiking trails run through ancient forests and along historic mule tracks, with views of the mountains of Abruzzo. The landscape can be explored both on foot and through the Museo delle Acque. The museum is an interactive museum facility dedicated to the waterways of the Gran Sasso and the Laga Mountains.

At the Museo delle Acque, the Sentiero Natura leads to the historic Acquatina spring. In addition, the Museo delle Acque has a special visitor route for blind visitors. These two aspects make the museum a specific destination when you are interested in water landscapes or are looking for an accessible way to learn.

Advance booking is normally required in good time for guided tours of the Santuario di San Gabriele. If you plan this visit as a fixed part of your stay, be sure to arrange your booking early. For the other experiences, historic churches, the two hikes, forest paths, mule tracks, and the Museo delle Acque with its outdoor trails are available as different focal points.
