Silvi Paese Among Alleys, Arches and Courtyards

Silvi Paese comprises cobbled alleys, arches and hidden courtyards. The medieval village of Silvi Alta is supported by walls with round arches. At the easternmost point of the village lies the Belvedere di Silvi Paese, where the two ring roads, Meridionale and Boreale, meet. The Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore is the oldest church in the town and a Romanesque building dating from the 11th century. Inside the church is an 18th-century wooden figure of San Leone, made in the Neapolitan style. The historic centre of Silvi Paese is supported by large reinforcing arches built after the 1933 earthquake. Here, you therefore encounter different traces of architectural history in one place: a Romanesque church building, an 18th-century figure and reinforcements created after a historic earthquake.

The Feast of San Leone and the Ciancialone

If you would like to get to know Silvi through its local customs, Lu Cencialon is one of the village’s specific festive traditions. Lu Cencialon takes place during the Feast of San Leone, Silvi’s patronal festival, on the last Sunday in May. On the day of the festival, local young people collect as many reeds as possible and tie them together into the large bundle known as the Ciancialone. The Ciancialone is erected in Piazza Largo della Porta between the Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore and the road around the medieval village of Silvi Paese.

Paths with a Historic Character

The unmarked Lu coche path runs along Via Palmisano towards the Cappella della Madonna dello Splendore. It was once used by fishermen to reach the beach. Its former function is therefore part of the local history and should not be equated with a present-day marking. The Sentiero dello Splendore is somewhat steep; via this path, Silvi Marina can be reached in about 30 minutes.
