Valle Castellana lies amid the lush forests of Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. Numerous hiking trails begin in the main town and the valley’s many hamlets. Traditional chestnut festivals take place in Valle Castellana and Leofara in autumn. The Festa della Castagna di Leofara focuses on the Marrone di Valle Castellana. The chestnut thus shapes a seasonal aspect of the local food culture and connects festival traditions with a regional product.

Churches with Medieval Traces

The Church of Santa Maria di Stornazzano is now known as the Annunziata and dates back to the 11th century.

Castel Manfrino Above the Salinello

The small chapel of Castel Manfrino is partially preserved and decorated with valuable frescoes. Castel Manfrino stands on a rocky spur above the valleys of the Salinello River. The fortified complex follows the course of the rocky ridge and comprises three square watchtowers.

Laturo and Its Preserved Structure

The hamlet of Laturo has no roads suitable for vehicles and can only be reached via paths. This is a distinctive local factor to consider when planning: Laturo cannot be treated like a place with road access. Despite collapses and advanced decay, the hamlet’s abandonment preserved the integrity of its typological and structural components.

The Eremo di Sant’Angelo in Volturino

In the Eremo di Sant’Angelo in Volturino, a cave preserves remains with cells beneath a rock overhang, a small altar and traces of faded frescoes. The Eremo was a religious centre in the form of a monastery, initially housing Benedictines and later Olivetans under priors and abbots. Preserved spatial traces thus meet a monastic history shaped by two successive religious communities.

The Castellano as a Regional Boundary

Within the municipality of Valle Castellana, the Castellano River marks the boundary between Abruzzo and Marche along almost its entire course. It subsequently flows into the Tronto River within the city of Ascoli. The Castellano is therefore part of the landscape and, at the same time, a geographical line between two regions with a further connection in the Ascoli area.
