Etroubles in the Gran San Bernardo Valley

Etroubles lies at an altitude of 1,270 metres in the alpine Gran San Bernardo Valley. Extensive forests and green meadows surround the village. The combination of wooded sections and open pastureland characterises the landscape. It is also reflected in the summer hike from Etroubles to Bruson, which leads through meadows and a cool forest. Hiking Trails to Bruson and Saint-Oyen

The Etroubles–Saint-Oyen health trail leads for 2.1 kilometres from Etroubles to Saint-Oyen and has an elevation difference of 79 metres. The route is considered easy, is suitable for everyone and can also be walked with a pushchair. The 2.1-kilometre distance remains manageable for planning, while the 79 metres of elevation gain represent a climb in their own right. Those wishing to use the trail with a pushchair should therefore consider both the length and the elevation.

The Nordic walking trail starts at the sports area of Etroubles, passes through Saint-Oyen among other places and then returns to its starting point in Etroubles. While the health trail ends in Saint-Oyen, the Nordic walking trail returns from there to Etroubles. For personal planning, it should first be clarified whether Saint-Oyen is to be the destination or Etroubles the return point.

Historic Sites and Regional Production

The Torre di Vachéry is a 12th-century tower in the hamlet of Vachéry. The Latteria Turnaria, founded in 1853 as the region’s first turnaria dairy, now houses a museum about the production of Fontina, butter and Séras. The three products connect the Latteria with the regional production tradition. The original tools from that period are also part of the museum collection.

Ecomuseum and Ancient Route

The Centrale Bertin has been redesigned as an ecomuseum. It documents the transition of the rural communities of the Gran San Bernardo Valley to modern times. The Via Francigena later developed along the ancient Via delle Gallie, which passed through Etroubles. At the Centrale Bertin, the transition of rural communities to modern times stands alongside the history of the Via Francigena route.

The ruins of Le Crêt are located in the surrounding area of Etroubles. Mont de la Tza and Pointe de Metz are also located in the surrounding area of Etroubles. The same applies to Testa di Crevacol and Becca France.

Getting to Etroubles

Etroubles can be reached by bus from Aosta via the Aosta–Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses line. For an individual journey, Aosta can be planned as the starting point for this bus connection.
