Minervino Murge: Culture, Forest and Panoramic Views

Minervino Murge reveals different sides: an ancient place of worship in a natural karst cave, a medieval district, archaeological evidence and an extensive forest south of the town. Added to this are panoramic views over the Valle dell’Ofanto, the Parco Nazionale dell’Alta Murgia and nearby Basilicata.

Place of worship, fortress and archaeological evidence

The Grotta-Chiesa di San Michele is an ancient place of worship in a natural karst cave. The route into the cave leads up ninety steep steps to the altar of Saint Michael. A gravestone that bears witness to the local cult is also located there. The cave combines religious history with the natural form of the karst cave. The route over ninety steep steps is a physical section in its own right and should be taken into account when planning the day.

The Castello di Minervino was founded as a fortress in the 11th century. It forms the original core of the town’s medieval district, known as “Il Balcone delle Puglie”.

The Museo Archeologico Minervino contains amphorae, vessels, various everyday objects and weapons. The objects date from the 1st millennium BC to the first centuries of the Roman Empire. When the museum reopened on 19 May 2002, the archaeological exhibition “Quando l’Ofanto era color dell’ambra” was presented. 19 May 2002 refers to the museum’s reopening, not the period when the exhibits were created; their chronological range extends from the 1st millennium BC to the first centuries of the Roman Empire.

Bosco di Acquatetta and trails through the Alta Murgia

The Bosco di Acquatetta lies south of Minervino Murge. The forest covers 1,100 hectares and is the second-largest forest in Apulia by area. Wild orchids and aromatic plants such as thyme, peppermint and wild fennel grow along its paths. Edible plants that form part of traditional cuisine are also found there. When planning the day, the size of the forest is a spatial factor in its own right, in addition to the plants and their connection with traditional cuisine.

The circular route “I sentieri dell'Alta Murgia” takes hikers to the bauxite quarries in the hamlet of Murgetta Rossa and then back to the entrance of the Bosco di Acquatetta. For personal planning, it is important to note that the return to the entrance is already part of the route.

Views and getting there

The panoramic views from Minervino Murge extend over the Valle dell’Ofanto, the Parco Nazionale dell’Alta Murgia and as far as nearby Basilicata. This means that the view reaches beyond the immediate surroundings of Minervino Murge.

According to the access signpost, state railway operator Trenitalia provides train connections onward from Gioia del Colle via Santeramo, Altamura, Gravina in Puglia or Poggiorsini to Minervino Murge. The access signpost also lists Spinazzola as a possible onward destination.
