Triggiano reveals itself through its sacred architecture, the rural culture of Apulia and the landscape of Lama San Giorgio. This gives you a multifaceted view of the town and its surroundings: Santa Maria Veterana and Santa Maria della Croce offer insights into architectural and artistic history, while museums, gardens and the course of the valley provide further highlights.

Santa Maria Veterana: Medieval Origins

Santa Maria Veterana is considered the town’s most important monumental testimony. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages; it was probably founded around 1080. In 1746, Nicolò De Filippis was commissioned to decorate the church with an iconographic program. He was a pupil of the Neapolitan master Paolo De Matteis.

Santa Maria della Croce and Its Artistic Tradition

Santa Maria della Croce stands on an old wayside shrine at a crossroads outside Triggiano’s former walls. The image preserved in the shrine depicts the Madonna and Child; its iconography points to the Byzantine tradition. The Baroque church has a longitudinal floor plan, a single nave and five altars. The main altar is made entirely of marble.

Monastery Complex Dating from 1616

The Capuchin monastery and the adjoining church dedicated to the Madonna degli Angeli were built in 1616. The date places both buildings in a further historical phase of Triggiano’s sacred architecture.

Lama San Giorgio and Its Habitats

Among the Lame in the Province of Bari, Lama San Giorgio is the most extensive. Its valley contains diverse vegetation and several phytoclimatic habitats. This adds a landscape theme to the area’s cultural history, offering a distinct perspective especially for travelers interested in natural history.

Rural Culture and Museums

The Museo della civiltà contadina Triggiano collects small and large objects from the rural culture of Apulia. The collection brings together items of different scales and makes the everyday life of regional agriculture an independent cultural theme.

The museums Dipartimento di Zoologia, Museum of Science of the Heart, Margherita Theatre and Mostra SenzAtomica are also located in the surroundings of Triggiano. For your planning, this broadens the cultural focus beyond the sacred buildings and the local rural collection.

Beach, Natural Arch and Gardens in the Surrounding Area

In the surroundings of Triggiano, Spiaggia Pane e Pomodoro is a beach, while Arco Delle Meravigli is a natural arch. Together, these two places represent different forms of landscape in the area.

Also in the surroundings of Triggiano are the Orto Botanico, a botanical garden, and Giardino Santa Scolastica, a garden. This gives you a choice of themes ranging from architecture, culture and vegetation to landscaped green spaces.

The different themes help you experience Triggiano according to your own travel rhythm. Sacred buildings, rural culture, museums in the surrounding area, the course of the valley, the beach, the natural arch and the gardens each create their own focal points. Which of these perspectives you combine depends on your personal interests and the emphasis you want to give your trip.
