Churches and local history

San Pancrazio Salentino combines striking religious buildings with a long local history. The Parrocchia Santi Pancrazio e Francesco d’Assisi was inaugurated in 1872. Its layout follows the shape of a Latin cross; it also features a single-nave interior and a neoclassical façade. The Chiesa di sant’Antonio da Padova was probably built in 1551 on the same chapel around which the first settlement of San Pancrazio Salentino developed between the 10th and 11th centuries. Altered several times, it provides a direct link to the early history of the town.

The interior of the Parrocchia Santi Pancrazio e Francesco d’Assisi also contains noteworthy details. The main altar was made of polychrome marble in 1750 by Aniello Gentile and moved to its present location in 1970. There are also paintings by Salvatore Murra depicting the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity, as well as the cardinal virtues of justice and prudence. Traditions and historic sites

The Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata was built in 1510 and altered several times. It preserves the so-called Misteri: papier-mâché statues depicting different moments from the Passion of Christ, which are carried in a procession on Good Friday.

The archaeological site of Li Castelli lies immediately east of San Pancrazio Salentino. The remains of an Iron Age village consisting of huts have been preserved there; it was later transformed into a fortified centre. The Grotta dell’angelo is also located nearby. The cave was originally a chamber tomb and was reused by Byzantine monks between the 7th and 11th centuries. Both sites provide insight into different periods of the region’s past.

Woodland, karst and distinctive landscape experiences

The Santuario di Sant’Antonio alla macchia is located about 3 km from San Pancrazio Salentino. The sanctuary is surrounded by a pine forest covering approximately 37 hectares. Near the sanctuary there is a natural karst cave that was initially used as monastic accommodation and later as an underground olive mill. Its former use also makes the cave interesting from a cultural and historical perspective.
