San Donaci: Wine, Olive Oil and Sacred Art

San Donaci combines sacred art, traditional festivals, wine and olive oil culture with a landscape where nature and historical traces remain present. The town is known as a city of olive oil and wine. The Chiesa Matrice di Santa Maria Assunta can be reached on foot, by bicycle and by public transport; parking is available nearby. Its present appearance dates from 1899 and combines late Neoclassical elements with Apulian Baroque. Inside, an altar made of Lecce stone, originating from an older church, remains visible.

Smaller religious buildings also shape the townscape. The Chiesetta di Santa Maria delle Grazie is now a cemetery chapel and preserves a 15th-century fresco of the Madonna and Child. The Tempietto di San Miserino stands in isolation among the vineyards of the San Donaci agricultural area. You can reach it on foot, by bicycle or by car; parking is available nearby.

The San Donaci area was inhabited by the Messapians. The surrounding area is also said to contain remains of Roman country villas. The small Museo dedicato alla Serva di Dio Nina Lolli offers a personal insight into the town's history. It is dedicated to Mamma Nina and her embroidery. Nina Lolli, known in San Donaci as Mamma Nina, devoted her life to helping others and exclusively to sacred embroidery.

Festivals Between Tradition and Community

In April, the Fiera di San Vincenzo di Ferrer is regarded as an event connected with local culture and traditions. Businesses present products, handmade goods and agricultural equipment there. In August, the celebrations in honour of the patron saint Santa Maria delle Grazie follow. They include a procession with the statue through the streets of San Donaci. The secular celebrations include fireworks, concerts by the local brass band and market stalls.

In the same month, the Sagra degli antichi sapori is an annual festival dedicated to the region's gastronomic and oenological specialities. Visitors can sample pecura alla pignata, pezzetti te cavallu, carne rrustuta and gnemmarieddri, as well as traditional olive oil, wine and bread baked in a wood-fired oven. Traditional music groups provide music and dancing. In this way, the festival combines regional products with an explicitly sociable setting.

Wine and Culinary Insights

Cantina San Donaci was founded in 1933 on the initiative of a group of twelve farmers. The main winery of Cantine Paololeo is located in San Donaci in the Parco del Negroamaro; the company was founded in 1989. Both names represent the wine tradition that shapes the town just as much as olive oil.
