Torchiarolo between Valesio, vineyards and the coast

Torchiarolo combines archaeological traces, sacred architecture, vineyards and olive groves with the coastal landscape of Torre San Gennaro. Local history, the rural surroundings, pilgrimage and nature shape the different facets of the town.

Archaeology and architecture in Torchiarolo

The Valesio archaeological site reveals settlement phases ranging from the Iron Age in the 8th to 7th century BC to the Late Middle Ages. The Infocaciucci Canal is also located near Valesio and is now a natural area where migratory birds can be found.

The Palazzo Baronale of Torchiarolo was completed in 1698. Its original defensive system is represented by a square corner tower dating from the 16th century. The palazzo also has a portal in the Catalan style, above which is the coat of arms of the Caracciolo family.

The Chiesa Madre di Maria SS. Assunta was built towards the end of the 16th century, received two additional side aisles in the 18th century and has a façade following a typical Baroque design. The Chiesa del Santissimo Rosario is Neoclassical. The Sant’Antonio Chapel has a single-nave interior and was inaugurated on 30 May 1680.

Palazzo Tarantini is a fortified house in Corte Rosario. Torre Bartoli dates from the 16th century and still rises today in the Contrada Pisciani as an agricultural masseria and defensive tower. The construction of Torre Lo Muccio is believed to date back to the 15th century; the tower is located along the road to the Adriatic coast. In the historic centre, Corte San Domenico is one of two fortified houses. Corte San Domenico takes its name from the saint depicted in a fresco in the outer niche beside the arch.

Landscape between olive groves and the Adriatic coast

The landscape around Torchiarolo is characterised by extensive vineyards and ancient olive groves. Along the coast of Torre San Gennaro, long sandy beaches alternate with rocky stretches of coastline. The route to Torchiarolo passes through the Bosco Tramazzone–Cerano nature reserve. Near Torchiarolo, archaeological sites, churches and pilgrimage stand alongside vineyards, olive groves and the coast of Torre San Gennaro.

The Feast of Madonna della Madonna di Galeano is celebrated annually in the days around Easter with religious and civic rites involving the entire community. The Santuario della Madonna di Galeano is a pilgrimage destination in the landscape around Torchiarolo. The Santuario di Galeano was reopened for worship after restoration work.

Antica Valesio is a ruin site in the immediate surroundings of Torchiarolo, while Masseria Nuova is a ruin site in the area around the town. Santa Elisabetta and Madonna delle Grazie are churches in the immediate vicinity. The Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie is a rural church at a crossroads just outside Torchiarolo and preserves visible traces of an intricately executed fresco.

The Giardino Ippoliti, Giardino Santa Barbara and Giardino Mazzarelle gardens are also located nearby. Lido Stella is a beach in the wider regional area around Torchiarolo.
