Accadia between Local History and Nature

Rione Fossi and the History of the Town

Rione Fossi is the uninhabited medieval center of Accadia, which was abandoned after the 1930 earthquake. The district features paved streets, winding alleys and medieval dwellings, as well as the remains of churches and fortifications. It also includes a mosaic of prehistoric caves and dwellings. Museum and Monumental Fountain

The Museo delle Origini (MOA) is located in Palazzo Di Stefano. It is designed as an archaeological and civic museum. The MOA includes the Dea Madre sculpture, which has great symbolic significance for the history and identity of Accadia.

The monumental fountain was built in 1836 under Ferdinand I of Bourbon. Four tapering Doric columns support an entablature with triglyphs and a pediment. The fountain also commemorates the water conveyed by the local aqueduct. In this way, the structure combines architectural design with a connection to the local water supply.

Dates in July

The Accadia Blues Festival takes place every year on the third weekend of July. The Feast of Madonna del Carmine is celebrated on July 16. If you plan your stay around cultural dates, these two dates give July in Accadia a clear timeframe.

Gole di Pietra di Punta and Torrente Frugno

The Gole di Pietra di Punta feature small waterfalls and pools inhabited by amphibians and insects. During the warm season, wild orchids and woodland lilies add splashes of color to the vegetation. The Gole di Pietra di Punta can be reached via a path that begins at the Chiesetta di Santa Maria Maggiore and follows the bed of the Torrente Frugno. The excursion is considered not difficult.

The Cammino del torrente Frugno is lined by a gallery forest consisting mainly of willows and poplars. This natural area is particularly appealing if you would like to include waterways, plants and opportunities to observe smaller animals in your trip.
