Torre Mileto: Beach, Coastal Lakes and Historical Traces

A coastal landscape between two lakes

Torre Mileto combines a wide beach with the landscape of the coastal lakes and a maritime history. The town lies between the coastal lakes of Lesina and Varano. This creates a destination where beach, waterscape and historical traces stand close together, without necessarily forming a single, unified experience.

Beach, dunes and the Schiapparo Canal

The wide beach begins below the tower and continues along the shore of Lago di Lesina beside an almost untouched dune hinterland. At the other end, the beach ends at the Schiapparo Canal. The Schiapparo Canal connects Lago di Lesina with the sea. Torre Mileto Beach is located in the immediate vicinity of Torre Mileto; Spiaggia di San Placido is also nearby. Along this section of the Torre Mileto coast, the beach, lakeshore, dune hinterland and transition to the sea therefore stand alongside one another as distinct landscape elements.

A wreck with a turbulent history

The wreck of the Poma Santa Maria lies on the seabed off the coast of Torre Mileto. The Poma Santa Maria was a Marsiliana ship and sank in 1607. The ship is also associated with the suspicion that it was carrying an illegal shipment of weapons. This combination of coastal setting, underwater find and historical tradition gives Torre Mileto a cultural dimension that extends beyond the beach.

The tower and Gargano National Park

One of the visitor centres of Gargano National Park is located at the Torre Mileto tower. The tower thus represents both orientation within the landscape and the connection between the coast, lakes and the natural environment of the Gargano. The tower remains connected with Gargano National Park, while the other historical sites are located in the surrounding area of Torre Mileto. Several different examples of history and regional culture can be found in the surroundings of Torre Mileto. Palazzo Zaccagnino is a palace, while Castello di San Nicandro Garganico is a castle. The Museo Storico, Etnografico e della Civiltà Contadina is a museum. The remains of the Roman villa near Sant'Annea are ruins. This setting is complemented by further beaches: Spiaggia di Cauto and Spiaggia di Capoiale are located in the surroundings of Torre Mileto. The range of sites thus extends from ancient remains and buildings to stretches of coastline.
