Lagoon, town centre and local character

Cagnano Varano combines the expansive landscape of the Laguna di Varano with a historic town centre and a fishing culture that remains present to this day. Covering 6,500 ha, the Laguna di Varano is the largest lagoon in southern Italy. The historic centre contains the town centre, which local residents call “Lu Caut”. It dates from before the year 1000 and gives the town a long historical perspective, particularly evident in its older buildings and preserved local traditions.

Historical traces in the town

The Palazzo Baronale stands at an altitude of 165 m in the highest part of the historic centre. The palace overlooks the ancient Coppa road, now known as Corso Giannone. A different historical period is represented by the twenty tombs of the Necropoli di Bagno di Varano, which date from the Iron Age. Thus, in Cagnano Varano, the town’s medieval history meets significantly older archaeological traces.

Lagoon landscape and wildlife

The nature around Cagnano Varano features a variety of landscapes. South of the town lies the Valle di San Giovanni, with a depression approximately 200 m deep; it extends for around 3 km. Part of the Pineta Isola di Varano belongs to the “Isola di Varano” state nature reserve, established on 13 July 1977. The pine forest provides a habitat for rare species in the park, including the Eurasian hobby, which breeds there. On the southeastern edge of the Laguna di Varano, the remaining marshlands form an important natural oasis for the typical fauna of the reed belts.

Fishing and lagoon culture

The Laguna di Varano is not only a vast body of water, but also an area with its own history of work and culture. Traditional fishing techniques and equipment have remained unchanged there for centuries. Shellfish farming is the most important productive activity in the Laguna di Varano. In the Località Bagno di Cagnano Varano, a building was formerly used to weigh the catch. After being restored, it became the Museo del Territorio, della cultura lagunare e della pesca. The museum’s name brings together the themes that connect the town particularly vividly with the lagoon.

Routes and special destinations

From Bagni di Varano, a path leads to the Grotta di San Michele after a short walk. The cave is the destination of a procession during the Festa Patronale dei Santi Michele e Cataldo. The Festa Patronale dei Santi Michele e Cataldo takes place every year from 8 May to 10 May. The patronal festival includes brass band performances, a livestock fair and a procession through the town’s streets and to the Grotta di San Michele. This gives concrete form to the connection between local life, religious tradition and the landscapes around Cagnano Varano.
