Troia between the Cathedral, Pilgrimage Routes and Nero di Troia

Troia lies on the ridge of a narrow hill at an elevation of 439 metres, between the Tavoliere plain and the valleys descending towards the southern Daunian foothills. Churches, museums, historic routes and regional festivals give the town a distinct profile for a culture- and food-focused trip to Italy.

Cathedral and Sacred Art

In Troia’s historic centre stands the Co-Cathedral of Maria Santissima Assunta. It is regarded as an example of Apulian Romanesque architecture; its façade is marked by an ornately carved stone rose window. The Church of San Basilio Magno is the oldest church in Troia. The Museo del Capitolo is also known as the Museo del Tesoro della Cattedrale, is located in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and displays liturgical objects, reliquaries, processional crosses and sacred vestments.

Museums in Historic Buildings

The Museo diocesano di Troia preserves architectural fragments and sculptures from the former marble furnishings of Troia Cathedral. The Tesoro della Cattedrale includes three illuminated liturgical Exultet rolls from the 12th and 13th centuries.

The Palazzo d’Avalos was built in the 16th century and extensively restored in 1643. The Museo Civico di Troia occupies the ground floor and basement of the palazzo. The former San Domenico monastery was built in 1322 on the remains of the Castello d’Oriente and converted into a cultural centre. Historically, it also housed the Hostel Hospital del Cammino for pilgrims on the Via Francigena del Sud.

Historic Routes and Pilgrimage Tradition

The historic Via Traiana began in Troia and ran across the Ponte Rotto on the Cervaro near Castelluccio dei Sauri and across the now-ruined Ponte Rotto on the Carapelle. A section of the Via Traiana has been preserved. The historic pilgrimage route Via Francigena del Sud led to Troia in the upper Tavoliere delle Puglie plain and continued from there to the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo.

Wine and Local Produce

Nero di Troia IGP is a red wine made from grapes of the indigenous Nero di Troia variety, which is associated with the hills around Troia. The Convegno Regionale del Nero di Troia takes place every July and includes visits to local wine cellars as well as tastings centred on this grape variety. Presentations and tastings of local produce have been held in the cloister of the former San Domenico monastery.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Held every August, the Sagra della Cotta Cotta offers visitors the local dish made with beef tripe, along with local bread and red wine from Troia. The Troia Teatro Festival is a cultural event organised annually by the Municipality of Troia and transforms the town into an open-air stage for theatre and the performing arts. The Festa della Transumanza commemorates the seasonal sheep migration along the Tratturello Camporeale-Foggia, a branch of the Regio Tratturo Candela-Pescasseroli that passes through the area of Troia.
