Carpino: Chiesa Madre, GTG and Gargano landscape
Carpino combines historic sites with an extensive landscape area. The area stretches from the eastern shore of Lake Varano to the vicinity of the Foresta Umbra and the beech forests of Monte Spigno. In the historic centre, the remains of the Castello Normanno-Svevo can be seen.
Historic Centre and Chiesa Madre
The Chiesa Madre in Carpino was consecrated in 1678. Its distinctly Baroque-inspired façade features an elegant portal, side false windows and a semicircular upper façade. Together with the church building, it forms a clear cultural focal point for a stay in Carpino. If you would like to admire architecture, the Chiesa Madre, with its striking frontage, provides an introduction to the town’s architectural history.
The Grande Traversata Garganica
The Grande Traversata Garganica, or GTG for short, is an approximately 200 km circular route for hiking, cycling and horse riding. It passes through the inhabited area of Carpino. The GTG also includes an 8.2 km stage from Monte Civita to Carpino and a 9.7 km stage from Carpino to Cagnano Varano. The two stages place Carpino within the route of the circular trail and give you a concrete point of reference when comparing routes and planning your days. The longer circular route thus stands alongside the two shorter stages, meaning that both a longer overall route and a limited section can be taken into account for individual hiking days. Cycling and horse riding are also part of the GTG, alongside hiking.
Lagoon, Forest and Views
A prominent landscape feature is Coppa Tre Confini, an extensive plateau at 714 m and a natural panoramic terrace. The panoramic view encompasses Carpino, Ischitella, Vico del Gargano, Lake Varano, the Adriatic Sea, the Tremiti Islands and the Foresta Umbra. The landscape therefore extends from the lagoon to wooded heights and offers you a broad perspective of the Gargano.
Musical Tradition in August
The Carpino Folk Festival takes place annually during the first ten days of August and is dedicated to folk music and its fusions. It brings major figures from the music scene and icons of folk music to the stage. At the same time, the festival promotes knowledge of the Gargano’s folk traditions.
