Foce Varano between the lagoon and Adriatic Sea

Foce Varano is a seaside destination at one of the mouths of Lago di Varano. The partly untouched beaches of Foce Varano stretch between Lago di Varano and the Adriatic Sea. The Foce Varano Canal connects the Varano lagoon with the Adriatic Sea. The canal is the precise geographical reference point between the lagoon and the Adriatic, while the beaches make Foce Varano’s location between the two bodies of water visible.

Beach and designated nature area

The beaches give Foce Varano a distinct coastal profile. The “Isola e Lago di Varano” areas complement this coastal setting with an explicitly designated natural area: they are designated as a Site of Community Importance (SCI). As a result, the site’s connection with nature remains closely linked to the lagoon and its surroundings.

Towers in the built-up area

The built-up area is also part of the overall picture. The Torre Varano Piccola e Grande site comprises two towers at the eastern mouth of the Varano lagoon; the two are less than one kilometre apart. The fortified structures are integrated into the built-up area of Foce Varano. Their location at the same eastern mouth connects the two towers spatially, while the short distance between them makes them appear as a related historical reference point. The statement that they are less than one kilometre apart refers exclusively to the distance between the two towers; it is not a measure of routes to other destinations.

Church on the shore of Lago di Varano

Another focal point lies on the shore of Lago di Varano. The Chiesa dell'Annunziata e del Crocifisso di Varano was built in the 10th century and extended in the 16th century. The extension complements the older structure and points to several construction phases in the church’s history. Its location on the lakeshore closely connects the church with the landscape of Varano. The Crocifisso di Varano dates from later than the construction of the church and earlier than its extension. The sacred heritage includes the Crocifisso di Varano, a polychrome wooden statue from the 14th century. The work has been venerated by the inhabitants of Ischitella for centuries. The church therefore brings together architectural history, a dated work of art and a form of veneration that has continued into the present day within the local community.
