Ischitella is part of the Gargano National Park. Nature, architectural history, sacred art, and archaeology are connected in the town with specific geographical and historical references.

Nature and forest landscape

Beech trees grow in the Folicara beech forest at 160 metres above sea level. In the Bosco di Ischitella, they already grow at around 250 metres above sea level. The two woodland locations are separated by an elevation difference of around 90 metres. Nature is therefore not limited to a single elevation level.

Historical traces in the town

Two round defensive towers from Ischitella’s medieval town walls have been preserved in the historic centre. Palazzo Pinto–Ventrella was built in 1714 over the ruins of the former Castle of Ischitella. The defensive towers and the palazzo point to different historical layers: the medieval fortifications in one case, and the building erected over the remains of the former castle in the other. The two structures therefore do not date from the same period. The palazzo is thus a building constructed over castle ruins, not the former castle itself.

Churches and sacred art

The Chiesa della SS Annunziata is also known as the Chiesa del Crocefisso di Varano. It was built in the 10th century and extended in the 16th century; it stands on the shore of Lago di Varano. The two construction phases are separated by several centuries. The Crocifisso di Varano is a Gothic-Romanesque, polychrome—that is, multicoloured—wooden crucifix from the 14th century. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore has three naves and houses statues from the 18th and 19th centuries. Lago di Varano is therefore home to a religious building with a construction history spanning from the 10th to the 16th century.

Archaeology and earlier periods

Based on the finds, the necropolis of Monte Civita in Ischitella is dated to the period from the 5th to the 4th century BC. As a necropolis, Monte Civita represents an ancient burial site. In addition, the Ipogei di Masseria Niuzi consist of three underground structures. Monte Civita and Masseria Niuzi thus represent two different archaeological forms in Ischitella.

Religious tradition

The procession of the Crocifisso di Varano has taken place regularly every year on the same day since 1717. The recurring annual date is therefore firmly tied to the calendar. The church of the San Francesco convent houses works of art from the 18th century. The procession and the works of art represent two different religious references in Ischitella.

Regional mobility

Several bus routes serve the Gargano area. The regional transport connection therefore extends beyond the individual town and encompasses the Gargano area as a larger region.
