Historic Centre and Significant Buildings

Bovino’s historic centre is home to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. It has held the status of a minor basilica since 1970. Its construction history probably dates back to the end of the 8th century, when Roman spolia were used in its construction. The first records of work date from 1092 to 1099 and were commissioned by Bishop Ugone. Integrated into the cathedral’s main structure is the Cappellone di San Marco, dating from 1197.

The historic centre extends across the two neighbouring hills of San Procopio and San Martino. The tour also includes the artistically designed stone portals, which are considered sculptural masterpieces. The Castello di Bovino provides another historical point of interest: at the end of the 11th century, the Norman leader Drogone destroyed an older fortification and built the original core of the castle around a round tower on its ruins.

Museums Exploring Sacred Art and Everyday History

The Museo Diocesano is housed in the rooms of the Palazzo Ducale. It preserves paintings, sacred objects and liturgical vestments from the cathedral and other churches in Bovino. The Museo Civico Carlo Gaetano Nicastro focuses on forms of human settlement in the Daunian Sub-Apennines from prehistoric times to the 19th century.

The Museo della Civiltà Contadina is located in a former Capuchin monastery. More than 500 objects illustrate rural life there, including items related to agriculture, livestock farming, crafts, household life and religion. The Museo delle Armi houses the Procaccini weapons collection, considered one of the first three private collections in Europe, and includes weapon types from the 17th century to the present day.

The wider region also offers points of interest for cultural and historical excursions: it is home to the ancient site of Scavi Archeologici di Herdonia, the Palazzo Bonghi, the Palazzo Vescovile and the Museo di archeologia urbana - G. Fiorelli.

Pilgrimage and Religious Traditions

The Santuario di Santa Maria di Valleverde preserves a medieval wooden image of the Virgin Mary, which was extensively restored in 1965. On the first Sunday in May, the sanctuary is the destination of a penitential pilgrimage for believers from Bovino and neighbouring towns. On 29 August, the image of the Virgin Mary is carried in procession through the streets of Bovino, with people in historical costumes taking part. These fixed dates add a special cultural and spiritual dimension to travel planning.

Mountains and a Guided Trekking Tour

Monte Crispiniano is a mountain in the vicinity of Bovino. The wider region is also home to Monte Carpinelli, Monte Cornacchia and Monte Pagliarone. The Trekking Naturalistico in Bovino combines landscape, physical activity and history: the approximately three-hour trekking tour leads through paths, nature and history and includes a picnic. The meeting point is on Via Lastene.
