San Marco La Catola: Town Center, Churches and Landscape

San Marco La Catola lies at an elevation of over 600 meters and is one of the highest-altitude villages in Apulia. Its historic town center, sacred heritage and surrounding landscape provide several clearly distinct points of interest for planning your trip.

Historic Town Center and Palazzo Ducale

The oldest part of San Marco La Catola developed around the Palazzo Ducale. Locally, it is referred to as a castle; in fact, it is a ducal palace. The Palazzo houses the original chapel dedicated to Saint Mark the Evangelist. Its original entrance portal is decorated.

The well-preserved historic center is characterized by the so-called c’nant. These are narrow lanes with steep stairways that give the town center a clearly recognizable architectural structure.

Sacred Sites and Religious Art

The present-day Chiesa parrocchiale di San Nicola di Mira was completed in 1611. It replaced the former parish of San Giacomo, which stood on the site of today’s town hall.

The church preserves a valuable collection of sacred vestments donated by the Pignatelli family, providing another cultural and historical highlight.

The Santuario della Madonna di Josafat preserves a wooden bas-relief in the Byzantine style depicting the Madonna di Giosafat. This site is also associated with a stay by San Pio: in 1904, he spent a short time in the monastery of the Santuario while he was still a theology student.

Sentiero Italia Stage

Stage SI Q01 of the Sentiero Italia leads downhill from San Marco La Catola to the La Catola River. It then follows the Tratturo Castel di Sangro-Lucera to the historic Ponte dei Tredici Archi before continuing into Molise.

Mountains and Bosco San Cristoforo

Monte Sambuco, Serra Meccaglia, Monte Verdone and Pesco Carta are mountains in the area surrounding San Marco La Catola. Bosco San Cristoforo is a woodland area of approximately 300 hectares, predominantly characterized by downy oak trees.

The wider regional surroundings of San Marco La Catola include Castello Di Capua as a castle, Villa Clementina as a palace, the Priorato di S. Matteo di Sculgola as an archaeological ruin site and the Tempio italico as an ancient site.
