Agricultural Surroundings and Rural Character

Stornara lies in the southern part of the Tavoliere delle Puglie and was founded as an agricultural settlement colony. Even today, especially during sowing season, starlings circle above the wheat fields. This combination of farmland and local history makes Stornara interesting for travellers who want to discover Italy beyond purely urban attractions.

Murals and Striking Buildings

Stornara is home to more than 130 murals created by Italian and international street artists. There is a recommended walking route for visiting the murals; it starts at the Stramurales InfoPoint. The Stramurales street-art festival is organised every year by Stornara Life APS. Historic buildings add further distinctive features: the Torre dell’Orologio is a 19th-century landmark in the historic centre, while the Torre Arcipretale is an 18th-century architectural or cultural monument.

History Between Church and Ruin

The Chiesa Madre di San Rocco was built in 1856 in simple neoclassical forms. Stornara is one of the five Reali Siti founded by King Ferdinand IV in 1774. During the age of Frederick II, the town was a small rural centre on the Via Traiana. The original settlement was centred around a building complex founded by Jesuits. A heavily altered tower, known as the “casa della torre”, survives from it as a ruin. The town’s history thus brings together sacred architecture, older settlement structures and striking historic remnants.

Festivals with Religious and Social Significance

The Festa di San Rocco is considered Stornara’s central event of the year and is spiritually, socially and culturally significant. At midnight on Holy Saturday, a solemn Resurrection ritual takes place: a blessing statue of Christ is raised and held suspended in the air. The patronal festival takes place on 16 August in honour of San Rocco, San Francesco and Santa Maria della Stella. During this festival, statues of San Rocco, San Francesco da Paola and Santa Maria della Stella are carried in procession through the town.

Local Products and Flavours

The culinary side is also closely connected to the rural surroundings. On the eve of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Stornara hosts bonfires and a sagra featuring “pizze fritte”. In the Reali Siti area, pancotto is prepared from stale bread with potatoes, broccoli rabe or rocket and seasoned with garlic fried in olive oil, such as the DOP olive oil from Stornara. Stornara’s coat of arms depicts ears of wheat, red grapes and an olive branch. Since 2024, Stornara has been part of the Città del Bio network, in which municipalities promote organic farming as a cultural initiative.
