Acconia: Ancient Traces, Churches and Beaches

Acconia is a destination where ancient history, sacred architecture, palaces, nearby beaches and local festivals come together. If you would like to combine culture and scenery in Acconia, the Roman Baths, churches, buildings and beaches offer specific themes for planning your own days.

Ancient History Around the Roman Baths

The Terme Romane archaeological site is located in Acconia, a district of the municipality of Curinga. Under Articles 10 and 12 of Legislative Decree No. 42/2004, the archaeological area of the Antiche Terme Romane di Acconia is formally protected as cultural heritage. The Terme di Acconia formed part of a large monumental villa dating from the time of Diocletian. This gives Acconia’s ancient history a particularly tangible connection to an archaeological site.

Churches and Historic Buildings

The Church of San Giovanni Battista houses old depictions of the Annunciation featuring the Archangel Gabriel and Mary. The parish church of San Giovanni Battista in Acconia dates from around 1920. The Church of Santa Maria, Madre della Speranza, was consecrated on December 7, 2002. Together, these three details illustrate different periods in Acconia’s sacred architecture.

Several buildings in the surrounding area also add to the cultural picture. Palazzo Bevilacqua is a palace in the immediate vicinity of Acconia, as is Palazzo Loffredo. Piazzetta San Nicola is a palace in the area surrounding Acconia. The Museo Archeologico Tolone Azzariti is a museum in the surrounding area and expands the archaeological focus with another specific cultural site.
