Church and Museum as Cultural Highlights

The Chiesa Matrice San Pietro Apostolo dates back to 1619. Its furnishings include a Baroque high altar, giving the church a clear art-historical significance.

Another way to explore the history of the town is through the Museo della Civiltà Contadina ed Artigiana. The museum is spread across eight rooms and displays equipment used for spinning and weaving, as well as for working wood and iron. This means that the focus is not only on individual objects, but also on traditional craft activities. The museum collection also includes the traditional “Pacchiana” dress.

The surrounding area's agriculture also has a place in the Museo della Civiltà Contadina ed Artigiana: typical products of local agriculture are displayed there. Together with the traces of craftsmanship, they offer an insight into the rural everyday culture that shapes the town beyond its religious buildings.

The Amato Riverside and Historic Watermills

Along the banks of the Amato River near San Pietro Apostolo, you can observe five watermills. The mills form a site of significance for waterway archaeology. Their history probably dates back to around 1800; they remained in operation until 1960/65. This combination of river landscape and technical heritage gives a stay here an additional thematic focus.

To reach another scenic spot, the “Panchina Gigante” can be accessed by car via the S.S. 19 delle Calabrie.

Trekking, Hiking and Local Stories

The sports association Moving Emotions developed trekking and hiking activities in San Pietro Apostolo. As part of these activities, Moving Emotions guided visitors through urban and rural areas and told local legends and stories. The range of activities also included cycling tourism. This combination of exercise and storytelling helps explain how the town can be explored both through its built environment and its traditional stories.

Drama, Remembrance and Festivals

San Pietro Apostolo is associated with “A Pigliata”, a religious drama in the original language of an 18th-century manuscript. The drama has great cultural and religious value and is performed approximately every three years.

Giuseppe Garibaldi's visit to Palazzo Tomaini is commemorated by two plaques mounted on the exterior walls of Palazzo Tomaini. The plaques date from 1887 and 1961.

The Festa della Ciliegia is a recurring event in San Pietro Apostolo that, apart from the interruption caused by the pandemic, has been held for almost twenty years. Markets selling typical products were held as part of the Festa. Visitors could also sample ice cream and other cherry-based specialities.
