Soveria Mannelli: History, Trails and Calabrian Culture

Soveria Mannelli lies in the Reventino landscape at the foot of the Sila Piccola. The town is rich in springs and trails shaped by waterways and Calabrian literature. Here, a rural landscape combines with religious art, local history and cultural events.

Landscape and Local Character

The townscape includes Parco Carta, with 12,500 square metres of green space. It is located next to the production facilities of Rubbettino Editore and Rubbettino Print in Soveria Mannelli. Alongside the historic sites, this green space is also part of the townscape.

Churches and Historical Traces

The parish church of San Giovanni Battista houses a polychrome marble altar. It comes from the nearby Abbey of Santa Maria di Corazzo and is attributed to pupils of Cosimo Fanzago. The church was declared a national monument in 1910.

In the San Tommaso district, the Church of San Michele Arcangelo was begun in the final years of the 17th century and became a parish church in the second half of the 18th century. It contains a carved and painted wooden statue of Saint Michael. Its base bears the signature “fecit Franciscus Picano 1723”; the statue probably once adorned one of the side chapels of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Corazzo.

The Church of Madonna degli Abbandonati in the parish territory of Soveria Mannelli was built around 1890 and rebuilt in 1987. Its feast is celebrated on the last Sunday of July with a novena, a procession and secular festivities. A large fair takes place on the two preceding days.

The year 1806 is also present in the townscape: Fontana dei Francesi on Via dei Vespri is considered the place where the anti-French uprising began in March 1806. The historical reenactment “I Vespri Soveritani” recreates the events between 22 and 25 March 1806 that sparked the popular uprisings in Calabria against the French occupiers.

Lanificio Leo was founded in 1873 and is considered Calabria’s oldest textile factory.

Trails, Elevations and Events

The “Sentiero delle Storie” is a circular route of around 13 kilometres that surrounds Soveria Mannelli, covers just under 300 metres of elevation gain and reaches almost 1,000 metres in altitude. Each stage offers a story or an encounter with local figures and legends. If you would like to combine nature and culture on your trip, this trail is a thematic focus in its own right.

The “Concorso Teatrale Città di Soveria Mannelli” dates back to 1980 and takes place in August. In this way, theatre and the feast of Madonna degli Abbandonati complement the historical themes visible throughout the year with fixed dates in the annual calendar.

Mobility and Accommodation Planning

Soveria Mannelli was connected to the Catanzaro–Cosenza line of the Ferrovie della Calabria. Bus services operated by the Bilotta company connected the town with Lamezia Terme and the Tyrrhenian coast.
