Cortale Between Art History and Everyday Calabrian Life

Cortale combines a distinctive ecclesiastical and artistic history with products, festivals and landscapes that give the town a character of its own. It is worth paying attention to the details: frescoes, fountains, heritage-listed palazzi, handcrafted silk and traditional foods reveal the many different sides of the town. At the same time, Cortale lies on a hill above broad plains and impressive valleys. From there, views extend across the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia and the Gulf of Squillace.

Churches, Fountains and Palazzi

The Chiesa Matrice stands in the historic center. Built in 1799, it was decorated with stucco and 19th-century frescoes by Andrea Cefaly. In 1862, Cefaly and the painter Michele Lenzi jointly founded the “Scuola di Cortale”. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Cattolica Maggiore is also part of the town’s older building stock; it was built in the 18th century. In front of its façade stands a monument to the unification of Italy created by Andrea Cefaly. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista is classified as a subsidiary church.

Several historic buildings are heritage-listed: Palazzo Venuti under D.M. 05/08/1985, Palazzo Cefaly, including its interior furnishings, under D.M. 28/07/1987, and the Casa Natale del Pittore Andrea Cefaly under D.M. 11/12/2000. Palazzo Cinque and the adjoining Chiesetta di Sant’Anna are jointly heritage-listed under D.M. 01/06/2001. Palazzo Cefaly is also home to the Galleria Raimondo Cefaly and the studio of the painter Andrea Cefaly (1827–1907).

The fountains are also tangible witnesses to the town’s history. The Fontana delle Tre Cannelle is decorated with stone mascarons and fed by a nearby abundant spring. The Fontana di Donnafiori has six outlets; behind it is a washhouse with four basins. In the Contrada Abatia stands the Lavatoio delle olive, built in 1874 and considered a testimony to industrial archaeology.

Wide Views and a Special Stage

Cortale is the third stage of La Strada dei Due Mari. This crossing runs across the Isthmus of Catanzaro between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas. Its open position above plains and valleys adds a distinct landscape experience to this regional perspective.

Silk, Beans and Graffiola

Handcrafted products and cuisine are also part of the local identity. Handcrafted silk is among the products registered in Cortale’s De.C.O. register. Five varieties of beans are also grown in Cortale. A special sweet is Graffiola, an old traditional dessert from Cortale.
