The Sanseverino legacy is also reflected in a preserved work of art: a painting depicting San Francesco di Paola, created during his stay at Sanseverino Castle in 1464, is still kept in the church of Palazzo Sanseverino. Marcellinara also has a bronze portal by the Calabrian sculptor Giuseppe Farina in the Church of Maria SS. Assunta, installed in 1986. The Church of San Nicola is administered by the Arciconfraternita dell’Immacolata.

Remembrance and Older Traces

Sarcophagi with Greek inscriptions were found in the area of Marcellinara. Another way of accessing the past is provided by the historical reenactment “L’eccidio di Marcellinara – 4 luglio 1806 – la ritirata sbagliata”. It has reached its fourth edition and portrays the events of July 4, 1806, when the population of Marcellinara mistook Swiss troops serving in the French army for the victors of the battle because of their red uniforms, which closely resembled those of the English. The immersive theater is designed so that performers and spectators experience the same physical space.

Historic Road and Cycling Stage

Marcellinara lies on the SS.19 dir. delle Calabrie, an ancient consular road that historically provided the only connection between Catanzaro and Naples. For cyclists, the Tiriolo–Girifalco stage leads downhill toward the Gola di Marcellinara and the Sella di Marcellinara. These two landscape features are considered the narrowest point of the Italian peninsula; here, the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas are only about 30 kilometers apart.
