Pollino nature and special trails
The “Difisella” Botanical Garden is located in the municipal territory of Alessandria del Carretto within Zone 2 of Pollino National Park. It covers more than two hectares and consists mainly of a mixed forest made up of deciduous trees. Numerous tree, shrub and herb species contribute to a high level of biodiversity. The Acereta on Monte Sparviere lies within the Natura 2000 area, namely the “Monte Sparviere” SCI, with the code IT9310019. The Acereta di Alessandria del Carretto has also been included in the network of ancient forests of the national parks of the southern Apennines in Pollino National Park.
At the “Difisella” Botanical Garden, the paths follow a spiral route from 1,020 m up to an elevation of 1,082 m. They end at a platform with a wooden shelter.
Hiking and cycling
The Cammino Basiliano includes an E-rated stage from Oriolo to Alessandria del Carretto, which is also open to mountain bikes. Trail 1 of the Cammino Mariano Pollino offers a 134 km road-cycling route and a 37.4 km trekking route from Alessandria del Carretto to Civita. The different distances can help you assess sporting plans for your trip.
The Sparviere cycling route begins in the built-up area of Alessandria del Carretto, near Ambrosia Hostel. It is approximately 18 km long overall, is considered not particularly challenging and can be ridden in the opposite direction at a lower level of difficulty. It continues through the Acereta to Località Tappaiolo, where there is an artificial lake and a picnic area.
Museums, church and local traditions
The Chiesa Sant'Alessandro Papa Martire is freely accessible during religious services. Palazzo Chidichimo was built in the 17th century and houses the Museo Alessandrino delle Maschere. The palazzo is one of the oldest buildings in the town.
The Museo Alessandrino delle Maschere houses a collection of objects associated with carnival rites from around the world, particularly from Italy. The carnival tradition of Alessandria del Carretto distinguishes between the “Pohicinelle bielle” and the dark mask known as “l’Uerse”, made from black goat or sheep hide with chains and bells.
The Festa della Pita takes place on the last Sunday in April. Its characteristic feature is that men carry the plant on their shoulders or by hand. The plant used is approximately 18 metres long on average.
The Museo Naturalistico del Lupo is housed in the former primary school building. It uses dioramas to recreate the various habitats of the protected area and convey the history of the wolf and its relationship with humans. The museum also holds seminars, conferences and events related to its subject area.
