Castrovillari between Pollino and Culture

Castrovillari lies at the foot of the Pollino massif and is considered the largest urban centre of Pollino National Park. At the same time, the town in the national park is an ideal starting point for excursions into nature and guided tours. Castrovillari thus combines historic sites, museums and theatres with trails leading into a distinctive mountain landscape.

History, Churches and Museums

A prominent historical landmark is the Castello Aragonese. The castle was completed in 1490 and follows the fortified architectural style of the southern Renaissance. In 1995, the Castello was restored and returned to the city as a cultural space.

The Protoconvento Francescano was built in 1220 as a convent for Friars Minor. Today, the restored building houses the Sistema Museale della Città di Castrovillari, or SiMuCCà for short. The museum complex housed there presents the history, art and traditions of the Castrovillari area. Through artefacts and archaeological finds, the Museo Civico documents the historical heritage of Castrovillari and its surrounding area from prehistory to the early Middle Ages.

The religious buildings also span various periods. The Basilica pontificia minore di San Giuliano dates from the 12th century and is first mentioned in 1249 in a Greek-language notarial contract. The Basilica houses the Museo d’Arte Sacra, with paintings, sculptures, silverwork and liturgical objects from the 16th century. The oldest part of the Basilica Pontificia Minore Santa Maria del Castello is a Norman crypt.

The Pinacoteca Andrea Alfano is dedicated to the local artist Andrea Alfano (1879–1967). Its collection comprises more than 300 paintings, drawings and sculptures: the chronological span extends from the artist’s earliest works from the late 19th century to his final paintings from the mid-20th century. The Convento delle Pentite also houses Giuseppe Marulli’s painting “Madonna col Bambino tra Santa Maria Maddalena e Santa Maria Egiziaca”, dating from 1635–1637.

La Civita and the Theatre

La Civita is the old town separated from Castrovillari. It was built on a limestone spur and is characterised by narrow lanes and distinctive buildings. La Civita can be reached on foot or by wheelchair via a paved road.

The Teatro Sybaris is the centre of Castrovillari’s theatre activities and events. It offers around 300 seats, divided between the balcony and the stalls. In this way, the theatre scene complements the historic sites with a vibrant venue for events.

Trails in Pollino

C.A.I. trail 920 begins in the woodland above Castrovillari’s Botanical Garden and leads to the slopes of Monte Pollino. The nature trail C.A.I. 921 A in the Conca del Re of Castrovillari ends at the Sella del Campanaro, a viewpoint overlooking the Pollino mountains and the broad valley of Castrovillari.

C.A.I. trail 921 from Castrovillari via Madonna del Riposo climbs to the summit of Monte Sant’Angelo. The C.A.I. 921 Orto Botanico–Grotta delle Sirene trail begins on the wooded slopes of the Conca del Re in Castrovillari and reaches the Sella del Campanaro, with views over the heart of Pollino National Park. The CAI trail 921 also runs from Cozzo Palumbo to Serra Dolcedorme within the municipality of Castrovillari.

For a longer route, there is the section of the Ciclovia dei Parchi della Calabria from Morano Calabro to San Donato di Ninea, which crosses the Castrovillari area in Pollino National Park. The Via per la Francia section of the Cammino di San Francesco di Paola runs from Corigliano Calabro to Monte Sant’Angelo in Castrovillari, covering 71.6 kilometres over three stages.

Festivals, Theatre and Local Products

The events calendar shapes the character of the town. The Carnevale di Castrovillari is a recurring public festival that combines music, dance and tradition with allegorical parades, floats, folk dances and international performances. Primavera dei Teatri is an annual festival in Castrovillari focusing on new languages of contemporary theatre. Primafila is a recurring theatre series held during the Christmas season at the Teatro Sybaris.

The Estate internazionale del folklore has brought folk cultures from five continents to life in Castrovillari since 1984. During Civita Nova Radicarsi, the lanes, courtyards and squares of Castrovillari’s historic centre are filled with music, art, theatre and performances.

Regional agriculture and cuisine also have a stage of their own. The Festival della Cipolla Bianca di Castrovillari features debates, masterclasses and field visits centred on the town’s white onion, recognised with the DE.CO. designation since 2022. The Rural Food Festival includes tastings, workshops, and visits to wineries and farms.
