Renaissance, Sanctuary and Local History

The Santuario Santa Maria delle Armi is a Renaissance building from the 15th and 16th centuries, partially carved into the rock. The sanctuary includes a cave with the Black Madonna, which is kept in a silver reliquary. The site stands in a location that was already dedicated to worship in antiquity; remains from the 10th century were also found in the rock caves of Monte Sellaro. In the town, the Chiesa di San Pietro adds to the historic character: the 15th-century church with three naves preserves its original Renaissance architecture and a marble altar decorated with inlays. Palazzo Pignatelli was built in 1600 as the new residence of the feudal lords of Cerchiara after the castle was considered uninhabitable.

Trails on Monte Sellaro

Monte Sellaro is considered the eastern foothill of the Pollino Massif and a natural viewing balcony overlooking the Gulf of Taranto. The Parco della Cessuta runs along the Gola del Caldanello and encompasses large parts of Monte Sellaro. Its paths and routes lead around the mountain to its summit at an altitude of approximately 1,450 m. A specific connection is provided by hiking trail 946: it leads from the entrance to the Parco della Cessuta to the Santuario Madonna delle Armi in Cerchiara di Calabria and is listed as measuring 4,790 m. From Cerchiara's historic centre, the Santuario Santa Maria delle Armi can be reached on foot via the historic Annanza trail.

Caves and Challenging Landscapes

The landscape around Cerchiara is also diverse underground. There are caves with predominantly horizontal passages as well as vertically formed cavities with large shafts, narrow passages and steps. The Grotta Serra del Gufo contains impressive chambers and shafts and is used by groups for courses and training. The Abisso del Bifurto is associated with Geosite No. 69 of the Pollino Park in Cerchiara and is among the most significant caves in Italy in terms of extent and depth. The Via Ferrata del Caldanello is also of interest to experienced active travellers: it is classified as difficult and features exposed sections as well as passages where the cable runs without intermediate anchors.

Thermal Waters and Practical Information

The Grotta delle Ninfe contains a 30°C warm pool in a limestone cave. Its sulphurous springs supply the thermal complex of the same name. The thermal complex of Cerchiara di Calabria was officially reopened on 7 June 2026. Travellers with motorhomes can use an active motorhome site in Cerchiara with seven equipped pitches, facilities for supplying and disposing of water and wastewater, and an electricity connection.

Tradition and Flavour

The Carnevale Cerchiarese is considered a distinctive local tradition. The traditional zampogna is played at the recurring festivals in Cerchiara. Pane di Cerchiara is also part of the town's culinary identity: it was selected by Slow Food for the Salone del Gusto in Turin.
