Churches, art and tuff stone in Fuscaldo

Fuscaldo can be explored through specific buildings, works of art, signposted hiking trails and the coast. The Chiesa Matrice in Fuscaldo already existed in 1166. On 5 June 1166, the Archbishop of Cosenza, Riccardo, consecrated its main altar in honour of the Apostle James the Elder. Its chapels contain paintings by Genesio Gualtieri da Mormanno and G. Battista Santoro.

The Chiesa dell’Immacolata has a bell tower approximately 35 metres high, built by stonemasons from Fuscaldo. Twelve fluted tuff-stone columns with Corinthian capitals characterise the tower.

The Chiesa di San Giuseppe probably dates from around 1700. This dating is therefore explicitly an approximation, not an precisely dated building history.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Rosario displays two works by the painter Antonio Berté, including the painting “L’Ultima Cena”. It also has a Stations of the Cross in bas-relief by the sculptor Antonio Ricci.

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Nuovo is an 18th-century oratory that was inhabited by Augustinians. Next to the main entrance is a medieval remnant of a cross-shaped column shaft. Thus, a religious building type, former monastic use and a medieval architectural element stand side by side at this site.

Hiking trails and the beach in Fuscaldo Marina

Fuscaldo’s local trail network comprises five mapped and signposted hiking trails. In addition to the churches and works of art, this gives you a clear reason to combine your stay with physical activity.
