Spezzano Albanese between History and Thermal Springs
Spezzano Albanese is a destination for travelers who want to combine Italian history, religious traditions, and landscapes shaped by different historical periods. The Cammino Basiliano passes through Spezzano Albanese, making the town relevant for travel planning focused on hiking or pilgrimage. When choosing your hotel, you can therefore consider whether culture, faith, or thermal springs should be the focus of your stay.
Archaeological Traces with Expansive Landscape Views
The Torre Mordillo archaeological park is located on a hilltop overlooking the Sibari plain. During the Hellenistic period, in the 4th to 3rd centuries BC, a fortification was built on the plateau along the entire edge of the hill; the surrounding wall had an unusual design. The hill occupied by the Castello di Scribla overlooks the plain below and lies 79 meters above sea level. According to Goffredo Malaterra, Roberto il Guiscardo is said to have built the Castello di Scribla in 1048 as an outpost for the conquest of the region.
Systematic research uncovered an extensive necropolis at Torre Mordillo in 1888, dating from the period before Greek colonization. The Museo di Torre Mordillo has five rooms, each dedicated to a historical period. It is located in the historic center of Spezzano Albanese, in the Palazzo Luci, and is fully equipped with educational videos and explanatory display panels.
Sanctuary, Church, and Local Traditions
Religious sites also shape the cultural experience. The Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie was founded in the 16th century. Two statues of the Madonna are kept there: a permanently installed statue and a processional statue. The sanctuary's celebrations include a procession that leads from the sanctuary through the town. Holy Week is known locally as Java e Madhe; on Holy Thursday, the Mass of the Coena Domini and the washing of the feet are celebrated.
The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo was elevated to parish status on February 18, 1607.
Terme di Spezzano and Relaxed Daily Rhythms
The Terme di Spezzano reveal another side of Spezzano Albanese. They are located in a park covering more than ten hectares, with Mediterranean pine and eucalyptus trees. The water emerges from five springs; the Fonte Thurio and Fonte Acqua delle Grazie are the main ones used. The Terme di Spezzano were established as a thermal station in 1923. When choosing your hotel, you can therefore consider whether to focus your stay more on archaeological and religious themes or on thermal experiences.
Local Products and Gastronomy
For 2025, the municipality describes the Fiera di Ottobre as a tradition rooted in its history, featuring local products and gastronomy. This focus can add a culinary element to your plans, while the archaeological, religious, and thermal themes appeal to different interests within an Italian journey.
