Montegiordano: Coast, Murals and History
Montegiordano reveals its character on several levels: the LocalitĂ Menzinara lies on the summit of an isolated hill flanked by watercourses and overlooks a broad section of the Ionian coast. Alongside this, Lucanian agriculture, religious traditions and large-scale contemporary art emerge as distinct cultural themes. This creates various focal points for planning your trip, between landscape, local history and the sea.
The ancient dimension becomes particularly tangible at the archaeological excavation in the LocalitĂ Menzinara. A Lucanian farmstead was uncovered there, which was used throughout the second half of the 4th century BC. Its square ground plan measured 22 metres on each side; seven rooms of different sizes were arranged around an open inner courtyard measuring 5.80 Ă— 5.80 metres.
A Place to Discover on Foot
A different image of Montegiordano emerges in the “Paese dipinto”. More than 200 murals by local artist Franco La Teana tell of everyday life, proverbs, family memories and the faces of the community. Together, they form a narrative about the history and identity of the town. A short circular route can be followed along these murals from the main piazza. In this way, the paintings become a tangible way to access the local character.
The buildings, too, represent different periods. The Castello was renovated under Marquis Lelio (Aurelio) Leone in 1656. Palazzo Solano dates from the founding period of Montegiordano and preserves the noble coat of arms of the de Martino family above its portal. The first Cappella della Madonna del Carmine was built by the Barons de Martino. Il Calvario is a monument with five crosses, probably erected in the first half of the 19th century. In the LocalitĂ Caprara, the chapel of the GrĂ ncia dedicated to the archangel Saint Michael has also been preserved in the surviving masonry; animal shelters are partially built onto it.
The local religious history also includes the Via Matris, a devotion to the Seven Sorrows of Mary. It was practised in Montegiordano on the Friday before Palm Sunday; seven crosses along the outer edge of the town led from the destroyed old parish church to Il Calvario. The GrĂ ncia in the LocalitĂ Caprara is regarded as a characteristic element of early Cistercian agriculture. For travellers interested in culture, this brings together architecture, archaeological spatial organisation, religious symbols and community history.
Those wishing to include local products can, with advance booking, take a tour of the winery at Tenuta del Castello in Montegiordano, including a tasting of wines and typical products. On the second Sunday in May, Montegiordano celebrated the feast commemorating San Domenico Abate, which lasted almost three days. It included a Mass, various market stalls and numerous animals.
For the coastal part of your plans, the precise distance is essential: Montegiordano Marina is 8 km from Montegiordano Centro and has pebble and sandy beaches. When choosing a hotel or other accommodation, you can therefore focus either on the town’s cultural and historical attractions or on the beaches of the Marina.
