Palombella: Rural Character Between Nature and Culture

Nature and Trails

For Palombelli, the Boschi di castagni, the chestnut forests, are among the attractions. In the municipality of Belmonte Calabro, the Fiume Veri, with its clear, calm waters, is considered suitable for walks and relaxing stays in nature. A hike along the Fiume Veri led to the Mulino di Pulibio.

The Drogone de Beaumont hiking trail leads from the seafront promenade of Belmonte Calabro to Monte Cocuzzo and follows CAI Route 815. In Calabria, the second stage of the Cammino di San Giacomo Maggiore runs from San Lucido via Fiumefreddo Bruzio to Belmonte Calabro. This provides different routes for planning your trip, without presupposing a particular hiking focus.

Churches, Monasteries and Art

In the municipality of Belmonte Calabro, the main altar of the Chiesa Santa Maria Assunta features an oil painting on canvas by Francesco Basile from 1794 and 1795. It depicts the Assumption of Mary. The side altar of the Blessed Sacrament also features an oil painting on canvas by Nicola Domenico Menzele from 1777. In one church, you can thus encounter two works by different artists and from different years.

The Convento dei Cappuccini was built in 1606. In the municipality of Belmonte Calabro, it preserves a cloister lined with columns and vaults, a fountain at its center, and a portico with two old sundials. The Chiesa Santa Maria Assunta was built over an existing curia building beside the castle esplanade.

The Chiesa del Purgatorio dates back to the 14th century. At its entrance gate, windows and steps, original frames and slabs made of tuff, worked by local stonemasons, are still preserved. The Chiesa del Carmine is connected to a monastery dating back to 1562; this monastery had a particularly extensive library. In the crypt of the Chiesa del Carmine, a floor hatch covers an ossuary.

The Mausoleo Michele Bianchi has a 35-metre-high column with a spiral staircase leading to a belvedere loggia. Together with the churches and monasteries, this structure broadens the cultural and historical perspective on the Belmonte Calabro area.
