Tarsia: Nature, Memory and Medieval Heritage

Tarsia combines nature observation, the memory of Ferramonti and medieval traces with festivals that bring together history and local identity. The Lago di Tarsia Nature Reserve features a nature trail; in the historic centre, the Centro Visitatori supports environmental education and visitor-flow management in connection with the nature-based use of protected areas. A stay in Tarsia therefore offers clearly distinct themes: protected areas and trails on the one hand, and museums, churches and historic sites on the other.

Nature at Lago di Tarsia

A nature trail runs along an artificial canal that serves as a habitat for the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis). In spring and summer, the animals can be observed basking there. A nature trail begins in the hamlet of Pietra della Lavandaia in the municipality of Tarsia, at the equipped area; it is of medium difficulty and approximately 600 metres long. The diorama section in Tarsia includes a diorama dedicated to the regional nature reserves of Lago di Tarsia and Foce del Crati.

Remembering Ferramonti

The Museo della Memoria Ferramonti di Tarsia was established in 2004 following many years of work to restore the rooms and conduct documentary research. It was created to preserve and convey the historical heritage of the Ferramonti concentration camp. Its collection includes documents, photographs, letters and personal belongings. The camp’s history is told on a tour through restored former pavilions.

Churches and Norman traces

The remains of a Norman castle stand on the edge of the settlement of Tarsia, while further north there is a tower from the same period. In the Middle Ages, Tarsia was elevated to the status of a county, making it one of only five counties in all of Calabria. The Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo dates back to the 14th century and preserves numerous processional statues, including an expressive 19th-century statue of Saint Francis of Paola. Other highlights include the Church of Santa Maria del Seggio, built in the 16th century, and the Church of the Beata Vergine della Cintura, built in the 18th century. The history of Tarsia also includes traces of Santa Maria di Camigliano Abbey in the hamlet of the same name, founded in the 12th century by Benedictine Cistercians.

Festivals, music and regional cuisine

Tarantarsia is a world music festival in Tarsia. During the event, young local volunteers accompany tourists and visitors on guided routes to discover the history. Tarantarsia also includes the food fair “Sapori e profumi della nostra terra”. The Palio dei Borghi Normanni programme includes a procession in medieval costumes from Piazza Seggio to Piazza San Francesco, traditional games from that period and a performance by flag bearers. In its third edition, the Palio is regarded as a community event that brings together history, identity and collective participation. A sagra featuring typical dishes from Tarsia and Calabria, including Capperi di Tarsia, was also announced in connection with the Palio dei Borghi Normanni.
