Santa Sofia d'Epiro: Arbëreshë Culture Between Churches and Nature

Historic Center and Religious Buildings

The historic center is divided into an upper area called Drelarti and a lower area called Drehjimi. It also features an urban structure traditionally known as Gitonia, shaped by Albanian influences, in which the neighborhoods are arranged around a central square. This spatial layout provides the setting for several churches with different histories. The Chiesa di Santa Sofia Martire is the town's oldest religious building and dates back to the 9th century. The Chiesa di Sant’Atanasio il Grande dates from 1742. The Chiesa di Santa Venere, Parasceve in Greek, dates from the 17th century.

Arbëreshë Traditions and Palazzo Bugliari

Santa Sofia d'Epiro preserves Arbëreshë traditions, including the old Albanian language and the Byzantine-Greek rite. The Museum of Arbëresh Territory and Costume offers a specific insight into this cultural character. It is housed in Palazzo Bugliari, a building dating from the mid-19th century, and presents a faithful and complete reconstruction of traditional Albanian women's clothing. This includes everyday, festive, semi-festive, wedding, and mourning attire. The visitor center for the reserves of Santa Sofia d'Epiro is also located in Palazzo Bugliari in the historic center. The Erbario del Crati occupies two halls of the same palazzo and serves educational purposes as well as scientific research into the endemic flora. The section dedicated to the Erbario del Crati illustrates all the plant species found in the area.

Festival, Torchlight Procession, and Murals

The Festa di Sant’Atanasio il Grande is celebrated on May 2. As part of this festival, a small, colorful paper balloon called the paluni Shën Thanasit is released every day at around 6 p.m. from April 23 until the feast day. On the eve of the Festa di Sant’Atanasio il Grande, a traditional torchlight procession also passes through the town's streets. This procession is called Piçëza. The colorful murals in the center of Santa Sofia d'Epiro add a contemporary touch. They were created as part of the urban art festival “Ylberi – Santa Sofia d’Epiro a Colori”.

Landscape and Birdlife at Lago di Tarsia

Part of the Riserva naturale del lago di Tarsia nature reserve lies within the municipal area of Santa Sofia d'Epiro. The hilly section of the protected area belonging to Santa Sofia d'Epiro includes Mediterranean maquis with holm oaks, elms, tamarisks, and strawberry trees. The landscape therefore presents itself not only as an open natural setting but also through a distinctive Mediterranean plant life. Lago di Tarsia, which also extends across the municipal area of Santa Sofia d'Epiro, is considered one of Calabria's most important areas for birdwatching because of its rich wild birdlife. Here, the focus is particularly on observing nature, studying plants, and watching birds.
