Condofuri is best experienced through Gallicianò and the Amendolea Valley. Gallicianò is a Greek-speaking village in the Amendolea Valley and is now part of the municipality of Condofuri. At the same time, the village lies in the Greek-influenced area of Aspromonte National Park and overlooks the Fiumara Amendolea. For planning your trip, language, sacred buildings, museums and a distinctive river landscape come together here.

Gallicianò and its Greek heritage

Gallicianò preserves a tangible and intangible heritage whose roots lie in Magna Graecia and which has been passed down through symbols, language and music. The Chiesa di San Giovanni is located on the main square, Platia Alimos. It is dedicated to the patron saint of the village. Another sacred site is the Orthodox church of Madonna di Grecia, also known as Panaghia tis Elladas. Its furnishings include Byzantine-inspired icons and ornaments characteristic of the Greek Orthodox tradition.

Gallicianò’s cultural profile also includes the Museo etnografico, dedicated to Anzel Bogasàri-Merianoù. The Casa della Musica, also known as Spiti ti Musikì, was designed as a space for research, experimentation and the creation of music and dance from Greek Calabria. The Grecofona Library is another place worth visiting in Gallicianò. Language, music, religious tradition and local memory thus come together in a closely interconnected field of themes.

Museums and historic sites in the Amendolea Valley

The Museo Archeologico “Vallata dell’Amendolea” displays archaeological finds from the municipality of Condofuri. These include Greek-Roman tombs, Capuchin tombs and a channel for draining water. The museum is housed in the former primary school building in Amendolea and is located near the Castello dei Ruffo di Calabria. Visits to the Museo Archeologico “Vallata dell’Amendolea” take place by prior reservation.

Castello dell’Amendolea includes a tower chapel built during the Norman period, with a small church featuring an apse. Its entrance faces south, in accordance with Byzantine tradition. The Castello also has a clearly identifiable entrance area and a rectangular Palacium Castri with high walls, round-arched windows and small towers. Below Castello dell’Amendolea lie the remains of the ancient village of Amendolea. A visit to the castle complex therefore combines architectural details with traces of the former village.

Fiumara Amendolea and the Sentiero dell’Inglese

The Fiumara Amendolea is considered the largest fiumara on the southern side of Aspromonte. With its broad riverbed and bends through the valley, it is a defining landscape feature. The area is also relevant for orientation along a longer hiking route: the third stage of the Sentiero dell’Inglese leads from Amendolea via Gallicianò to Bova. Amendolea can be reached via a turnoff from the provincial road at the level of the “passerella sull’Amendolea”. Condofuri thus offers points of connection for travelers who want to combine cultural discoveries with landscapes and hiking.
