Palizzi between a medieval historic center and the coast

Palizzi reveals several closely interconnected facets of Calabria’s local and landscape culture. The historic center has a medieval character, lies in the valley and is built against the castle’s rocky slopes. Those interested in established settlement patterns, churches and regional history will find a place whose character is strongly shaped by its location and preserved buildings.

Castello di Palizzi and Palizzi Superiore

The Castello di Palizzi dominates Palizzi Superiore from a rocky promontory. From there, panoramic views extend along the Ionian coast of the Grecanica area. The castle was built by the Ruffo family in the 14th century. Its surviving military features include high surrounding walls, gun openings, traces of battlements and loopholes, as well as prison cells carved into the rock. The Castello therefore offers tangible insights into medieval fortification architecture.

Churches and art in Pietrapennata

Pietrapennata is also one of Palizzi’s important cultural sites. The remains of the Chiesa di Santa Maria dell'Alica are located there. The church in Pietrapennata is also home to the Madonna dell'Alica, a valuable 16th-century marble bust by Antonello Gagini. The combination of a sacred building, surviving traces and a Renaissance work gives this place a distinctive cultural and historical profile.

The Madonna dell'Alica has been celebrated every year since time immemorial on May 8. This date is therefore particularly closely associated with the local religious tradition when planning your trip. Pietrapennata lies 673 meters above sea level and offers sweeping landscape panoramas. Its elevation, art and the remains of the former church create a setting here that differs from the valley of Palizzi.

Palizzi Marina and the coastal landscape

Palizzi Marina has a cove-shaped beach along the coastal settlement, as well as a railway station. Fishing takes place there from boats and from the shore. The combination of beach, maritime activity and its own railway station makes Palizzi Marina a distinctly different part of the municipality from Palizzi Superiore and Pietrapennata.

The coastal landscape also includes the hamlet of Spropolo. It has a beach and sea with particular scenic appeal. Spropolo lies near the Promontorio d'Ercole, also known as Capo Spartivento. In Calabria, the Calanchi di Palizzi Marina form part of a protected area associated with SIC code IT9350144. Thus, coastal beaches meet distinctive geological landscapes here.

Wine and local tradition

The Catoja of Palizzi include areas equipped for winemaking with traditional counterweight presses. Palizzi IGT wine has carried the IGT classification since 1995; its grape production area covers the entire municipality of Palizzi. Wine is therefore not only a culinary subject, but is also connected with local spaces and traditional forms of production.

In Palizzi, “Calici di Stelle” took place on the night of San Lorenzo, August 10, as part of the Paleariza festival. Typical local products were sampled in the Catoja and the town’s cellars to the accompaniment of folk music. This offers you a vivid picture of how wine, regional products and community cultural events can come together in Palizzi.
